Hi all,

I want to repaint the valve covers on my 68 GT500KR (while I have them
off, which I had to do to get the darned brake booster out!). They are
the "Le Mans" valve covers with the cooling fins, black with the top
surfaces clear.

So, the question is - how do I paint them while still leaving the
top surfaces bare metal?

Thanks,
Chris.

A couple of ideas

1. Wipe on petroleum jelly on the fins and details you don't want painted

2. Wipe off paint from these areas between the coats needed to make the
wrinkle paint work

I always block sand the fins and details before paint One direction, in
line with the fins of course winking smiley

I prefer to use pin stripe masking tape. I found that its hard to keep from
getting the vaseline from getting on places you don't want it. To be safe,
use an exacto knife to keep from pulling paint off with the tape. After the
paint is fully cured, use scotch brite pads to polish up the tops of the fins.

Good Luck,
Mark

Maybe I did it the hard way, but I painted over the entire cover, then
scraped off the fins and letters with a straight edge razor blade and laquer
thinner. They look great.

I repainted the covers on my 57 TBird recently after
buffing out the aluminum. I used pin stripe tape on
the fins, painted them and removed the tape with the
paint still wet. It was easier then to use an old
tshirt dipped in thinner (a small corner) and wipe any
excess from the fins. This worked well too because the
covers have the TBird logo in the center of them too
and are pained different colors than the cover. Best
of luck to ya.
