Does anyone know the history of the Mustang Running Horse ? Does Ford own the patent for the design ? The same design with only a few variations is used on a lot of products. I have an old picture of one and wondered if Ford owns the design.

I don't know the history, but I do know that Ford has a team of hungry
lawyers ready to pounce on anyone who uses anything with any kind of
likeness to any of its symbols. The running horse and mustang name are
trademarked of course, and woe to him who tries to use it without giving
Ford their due. They're weird that way, much more than most companies.

One of the Mustang magazine ran an article on the history of the horse.
I think it was Mustangs and Fords or Mustangs Monthly. The fellow who drew
the horse was left handed. That is why it is running in the direction it
is. He drew the horse for Ford before the car was on the market of course.
Ford was trying to decide to call the car a Mustang or a Cougar. Of course,
we all know that the Mustang was their choice. Maybe someone else can shed a
little light on this topic with some more history and facts.

Somewhere in there they also were going to call it Torino.
There is a DVD I saw recently with an early version a "Torino"
ad campaign, the DVD was made in England.

Read Iacocca's book. Torino was one name that was considered, along with
Cougar and Bronco (I think there were another one or two that GM ultimately
used). Torino was apparently thrown out for Ford internal political
reasons (something to do with Henry Ford). Cougar was the favorite of the
Mustang designers. Mustang was suggested, if I remember correctly, by an
ad agency.

Probably because Enzo refused Henry's offer to buy Ferrari...
so anything Italian was out...

Someone correct me, but which came first - the Ford Mustang logo or
the Southern Methodist University logo.

I thought I remembered reading very long ago somewhere that Lee
Iacoca "borrowed" it under some agreement. The sure look alike and I
think SMU had it first.

Pony's head on the SMU Mustang is held up high and the head on the Ford
logo is more forward and stretched out.

Artist who did the Ford pony probably copied parts of the gaitt of the SMU
pony, but thne there's plenty of other drawings of the Mustang in an all out
gallop that look like Fords logo.

Yes, SMU?s pony came first. And it absolutely IS the same logo.

The only exception is it faces a different direction than Fords.

I've seen those-in fact, I have one on my desk in a base as a paper
weight. If memory serves, mine has a FoMoCo part number on the
bottom of it.

Would I drill holes in my hood to mount it? No way!

Really? I happened to come acoss one on ebay. The description said there was an engraving on the bottom of the cast stating "patent pending...".

Like I said...I've never actually seen one on the hood of a classic Mustang (Thank Goodness!). Seems like more of a novelty item. Paperweight idea sounds like a keeper.smiling smiley

I've got the original running horse from my '65 (scraped up a little
from an accident) sitting on my desk. I've also got the gas cap on
the wall and the original running horse fender emblems on the sides
of my bulletin board. :-)
