Hi all--

Anyone with a 65 or 66 install a HIPO/Shelby manual choke on their car? Is
it difficult to do? Is it worth it? I have the standard Ford Autolite Four
barrel--I believe it is the 4300.

Thanks!

Why would you want to go to a hand choke over an automatic?

If the carb you have is one of the original types (65-66) then its likely a
4100. (4300's were used on 67-69 +)

IF you do have a 4300 then finding the carb brackets is going to be challenging.
FInding one for a 4100 is a bit easier if you can find a truck or Hipo carb to
get one

I think the HIPO choke was simply a manual choke. I wonder why ford (or was it just shelby) decided to go with a manual choke. Did the manual chokes come on autolite carbed applications or only for cars with holley carbs? I wonder if it was simply cheaper/simpler to go with a manual choke for the holley carbs?

It seems like it would be pretty easy to retrofit... I never used the "hipo" cable, but just used whatever the local parts store carried. The local auto-parts store will probably sell some type of manual-choke conversion kit. If you have a holley or other aftermarket carb you could get the manual choke parts from the maker. If it is an auto-lite you could use the parts-store kit, but my experience with the ones I have used from the local discount auto stores , is that they been they are of dubious quality -- that said, I have made them work.

As it turns out, I've always run (and converted to) a manual choke on my mustangs, but if I ever get around to it I think I'm going to switch over to an electric choke. The reason I always installed a manual choke was that it seems to me to be more flexible and less finicky than the automatic choke, especially on an old cold-blooded mustang in ohio winters. The manual choke allowed me to mess around with the choke/fast-idle to get the car started no matter the weather. Now that I live in california its less of an issue, and I'm probably just getting lazier as I get older... plus whenever my wife has to borrow the car she hates the manual choke.

J--

You are right--I have my autolites mixed up.

My autochoke is kind of flaky and I thought that this might be a remedy.

Why were they in the HIPOs in the first place? Just curious.
