OK... This may be a simple process, but I'd like some input from the
experienced folks out there. I have a 64 1/2, 289-4V, 4-Speed with manual
everything (brakes, steering, etc...). I installed dual exhaust, but now am
thinking that I might want to install either headers (Tri-Y) or performance
manifolds (K code type). The car is not concours, nor will it ever be, but
it will never be very modified either. Here are my questions:

1. Do the manifolds bolt right into the exhaust pipes or is modification
necessary?

2. Is there a significant performance increase with the manifolds over the
stock exhaust?

3. Do the collectors on Tri-Y's have to be welded to the exhaust pipes? (I
hope to be able to just cut back the exhaust pipes to allow clearance for
the headers.)

4. The car is in Southern Arizona, so rust is not a problem. What would be
the most economical coating to help protect the headers.

Thanks for any other pointers that you can give!

As for a coating, I used to spray heat paint inside
the pipes on my Harleys to prevent the discoloration
on the bends of the chrome pipes. I am sure this helps
a little bit. Also on my wifes 57 Tbird I used a
product Por 15 makes. It is a silver paint like
substance. You brush it on, bake in the oven (if
possible) and then reapply and either rebake or
install and run on the car for a while and it cures
really good. I did this for the stock cast itron ex
manifolds on the old bird and it still looks like new.
I suppose you could do the same on headers and
definately the hi po ex manifolds. I have Hedman
headers on my 67 w/power nothing on it and they bolted
right up...slip in from the bottom...and bolt to the
pipes. Take them to a pipe guy after you install them
if you aren't handy welding and the labor should be
next to nothing. I didn't coat my headers, but will
when I replace them. My car was real low and the
headers would drag everytime I went over a speed bump
or entered the road where I lived. I put new leafs on
the back and taller tires...the wheels I bought had
low profiles. The drivers side headers on the bottom
are flat now...almost scraped through...now that I
have it fixed the way it should be I'll be replacing
them when they blow through. I'd buy the Hedman
headers again too. I've heard the Tri Ys are nice
also. The people at Mustangs Plus talked me into the
ones I have now.

Not sure, they might....

Probably some improvement over stock.

You will need a collector flange welded to the exhaust pipe, and
no, it won't line up exactly right, the existing pipe will need
to be bent to fit the headers.
