Hey guys, I'm happy to report that I finally picked my car up from Classic Mustang of Houston this evening after it burned on Valentine's Day. They worked some magic on that engine compartment.
mustangfoto.com/mustang/underthehood.jpg
The engine is running great, but the starter is not. If the car is cold, it cranks right over. However, if the car is hot, it won't crank. My first thought is that the starter was damaged by the heat of the fire, and is about the go out. Has anybody else had experiences with the starter not working when the car's hot, and does it mean they are going bad or does mean I should put a heat shield on it or something. I'm running Tri-Y headers on my 289, but the starter was on there for more than a year without overheating before the fire.

I've had several starters that crank well cold but don't hot. It could
very well be the starter itself.

That is the standard symptom of a Ford starter on the edge of death.
Headers cook them quick - that's why (if I run a stocker) I buy the lifetime
warranty parts for a header car. The smaller gear reduction jobs last way
longer.

This is a common problem among street rod guys--engines put out so much
heat--headers adding to it--that it heat soaks the starter and causes
it to turn slowly or not at all. You might be able to get away with a
mini-starter to get some distance between headers and starter, or you
might be able to wrap the headers in heat resistant material that holds
in the heat.
I'd try a mini starter with a lifetime--lifetimes are always a good
thing to buy on common parts when you can. (Power steering pumps, for
me.)
