Congrats on the rebuild job! Yes, it is almost unbelievable what a difference a carb rebuild can make.

I rebuilt my carb about 6 months ago, but I think I'm gonna have to do it again.

The previous owner thought it would be a good idea to "SPRAY PAINT" the carb with a nice thick coat of BLACK PAINT! To make it even worse, he didn't stop at just painting the outside of the carb, he sprayed the paint DOWN THE THROAT TOO!!!!

I soaked it in carb cleaner for two days, then cleaned out all the passages as best I could, but I think it's still gummed up with that crap. It runs, but it's still not as smooth as it should be.

Now for the good news:
I woke up this morning and looked at the ground. It pleased me immensely to find that I still had to look DOWN to see it.

As the clouds of sleep started to clear, I then started to realize that not only am I still alive, I have a great wife and two wonderful sons. AND, to add icing to the cake, I have TWO Mustangs in my driveway! A 1994 Saleen V6 Sport, and a 1966 Coupe! What a WONDERFUL LIFE!

I felt sooooo good this morning, that I decided to keep the Saleen in the corral and drove drove my 66 coupe to work today. Who could ask for anything more? Can life get any better than this?

Well, good ol' Santa did some shopping the other day for his 16 year old
daughter. Seems she's got quite a wish list of Mustang parts on her list
for a 16 year old! So Santa loaded his sleigh with a new gas tank, front
and rear license plate frames ("65 Ford Mustang"winking smiley, a full set of external
emblems, paint for the dash and doors, a new CD player, and a new glove box
liner.

I think she'll be pretty happy come Christmas day and the following week as
she and Santa get the joy of putting it all together!

Merry Christmas to All!

Hi Leland,

Thank you for your reply which came direct to me. It seems on reading it
that you may have intended it to go to the list so Ive copied it below.
Those new blue gaskets do seem to be excellent.

During the rebuild I noticed that there "seemed" to be excessive slop
between the throttle butterfly shafts and the throttle body. However this
was the case even on the secondary side, even though this shaft gets
relatively little use. I'm not sure if its a problem or how sloppy they are
supposed to be, but I do note a little variance in idle stability and wonder
if it might be caused by air leaking through these gaps.

To close up the wear it seems to me that either the throttle body will need
replacing, or the holes drilled out and bushed, and maybe new throttle
shafts. Whats the normal procedure to fix this problem?

Cheers

Wal Marshall

Hi Wal,

Congraulations on rebuilding your carb. I do this on the side and find it
very rewarding and profitable. I have rebuilt many a different carbs in my
time, from Outboard Motor to Motorcycle multiple carb setups. On my 66
Mustang I run 2 Autolite (Ford) 2 BBL carbs with a total CFM of 690. I know
it moves more CFM than that, as I have modified them. I do like working on
Holleys, but feel the Annular discharge of the Autolite carbs make more
horsepower. Holley figured this out and came out with a design very simular
to the Autolites, but they just didn't sell very good. You did the right
thing by buying aHolley carb kit as they have really upgraded there kits
with the new style gaskets that are Teflon coated. These tend not to shink
or shrivel when left dry for long periods of time. These gaskets also can
be used over again, for fine tuning. One note to all, don't rely on
products like Stable to keep your carb i n good shape for long rest periods.
The best thing is to drain all the gas out of the carb. Holleys are easy to
do this, just remove the bottom screw or (bolt on newer models) and drain th
e flaot bowls, front and rear. Drain them into a small container. (Don't
drain the fuel onto the intake) Then pump the accelerator pump until it is
empty. This well help as any kind of fuel sitting will tend to gum up
eventually. If you have an electric fuel, run the motor and leave the pump
off, this will also drain the carb. You still might have to rebuild the
carb after a long sleep. The rubber pieces might get stiff, or crack, but
it won't be gummed up as bad.

Leland
