HELP! I am having trouble getting my 1969 351W to idle. I have completely
rebuilt the engine. Pony Carbs rebuilt the Autolite 4300 carburetor. I
had a little trouble coaxing it to life the first time to break in the cam.
After about 40 minutes of tweaking, rechecking top dead center, and jump
starting (ran the battery down while twiddling with it), it roared to life.
I kept it at 2500 RPM for 25 minutes to break in the cam (there was quite
a bit of backfiring through the carb at first, and still didn’t run
absolutely smooth during the break-in). I noticed that all the header
tubes were glowing bright orange except three of them. At ten-o-clock at
night, you can see these things (the next day I could see that the paint on
all of the header tubes was peeling a bit, so I know those cylinders *were*
firing). After the 25 minutes, it was so late I had to break everything
down and put the car away until today. I rolled it out of the garage and
hooked up the battery from my Exploder. It fired up on the fast idle cam
of the carb and ran enough so that I could dial the timing in close to 6
degrees (at 1500 or so RPM) with the distributor vacuum hose disconnected
and plugged. Any attempt to kick the throttle down to idle would result in
the engine dying. I went back and re-torqued the intake manifold bolts (a
couple took a quarter turn or so). All the hoses hooked to the manifold
tree are secure. I am at a loss as to what it could be (other than maybe
the carb *isn’t* set up correctly). Any suggestions??

Tony,
What kind of cam did you put in it? 289/302 cams will work in a 351 but have
a different firing order. I once bought a cam labeled for a 351W, but the
cam was actually for a 302 with the same specs. That would cause it to be
hard to start, backfire and bad running. Check your cam specs and firing
order one more time.
289/302 is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
351W / 5.0 is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Good luck,
Jack

It's the 5.0 HO that is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
This is due to Ford's using an off-the-shelf 351W marine cam in those
early 5.0s.

You know, now that you (and a couple others) mentioned it, and when you put
the firing orders of both the 289/302 next to the 351W, it bears out some
of the problems I'm having with cylinders 2, 4 and 7 (should be cyl 3, 4,
5, and 7, not cyl 2, 4, and 7). I followed the instructions for valve
lash adjustment in the book "How To Rebuild Your Small Block Ford" by Tom
Monroe. I used the directions for a 351W. Now I fear the valves may not
be adjusted correctly also! You would think Ford Motorsport would know
the correct firing order to show on the data card packaged with the cam
(part number M-6250-A332). Still working on this...
