Hi Guys
I have a 9" rear end with 3:00 gears in my 70 Mach 351C-4V and want a little
lower gear. A friend has a 9" with 3:73 gears he'll sell me for $100.00. Is
that a good price and are those gears good on the highway?
Also I posted an earlier question about swapping an FMX for a C6 or AOD and
didn't get much response. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I have 3.91s in my Boss 351 and find freeway driving to be obnoxious.
I'm always looking for 5th gear....
3.73 is lower, but not that much, I would think 3.50 would be better
compromise. My GT500 has the same problem (3.89 gears) and I plan to
go to 3.50.

I have a 3.5 center I am selling for $150 so $100 is probably a good price.

Sharon, You didn't mention what kind of rear end, open, Detroit,,,,,,?
Let's assume it's an open and the gears are good. Yes, that's
a good to fair price.
Define 'Good on the highway'?
Your Mach will probably feel quicker out of the hole and equally
feel like your transmission needs to shift into another gear
before you hit 65 mph.
I've played around w/ gears a little, and found that I'm most
comfortable with 3:50's. BTW, combo is a Toploader /w
225/70-15 soon to be 235-60-15.

I'm not a big transmission guy, but why would you want to swap
a FMX for a C6? I thought a C6 was heavier and eats up more power?
Is your Cleveland chewing up FMXs?
I can see going to the AOD, the 4th gear and 3:73's would be sweet.

Sharon,
I have a 3.00:1 open rear in my 71 Mach I 351C-4V with a C6 and a 3.91:1
Traction Lock in my Boss 302. The 3.91 runs speeds at twice the engine
RPM. i.e. 3500 RPM is 70 MPH. really cranking. It is great for running
high speed touring on tracks and autocrossing but really wound up fo
traveling down the road. The 3.00:1 in the Mach turns about 2800 at 70.
If I had to choose a ratio for road for both, it would be 3.50 for the
Boss and 3.26 for the Mach.
As for the trans, when I ordered my 72 Mach which was a 351C-4V I wanted
a C6 as I had had a 66 hipo 289 with C4 and it ate the trans in 50,000
miles. In 72 the 351C-4V came with a C6 not an FMX as it did in 1970.
When we restore my friend's 70 MAch 351C-4V we fully intend to dump the
FMX and put a C6. The C6 was originally designed to go behind the
Lincoln 430 and was used for years behind 460's. A stock C6 behind a
351C, from my own experience with the 72 will go at least 100,000 miles
and still be crisp enough to chirp the tires loose in a full throttle
2-3 shift at 5800 rpm. My 71 rebuild now has 25,000 miles and is running
great. While the AOD might improve your fuel mileage, I don't belive it
is anywhere near as rugged. The 71 gets 17 mpg on the highway at 65 to
70 MPH, which corresponds well to the 16 I used to get in the 72 with
the 3.26.
Your choice,
Bill

I've got 3.89 9" gears in my '67, and freeway driving is great, but I am
cheating, I have a T-5 5 speed with a .59 overdrive! I say do the AOD and run
whatever gear you want!
$100 is a great deal for the housing with the gears, if it is just the pumpkin,
it is an ok deal. Now, if that pumpkin has a limited slip clutch, then $100 for
the pumpkin with gears is a great deal! Provided that of course they are not
worn out.....

Thanks for all the help, guys. If I can't do the AOD swap, I'll stick to my
3:00s.

Sharon,
I put the AOD in my 70 Grande w/ 351W. I have the 3.00:1 open rear end
as well. I am definitely
looking to go to the 3.73 or 3.89 gears eventually. I have a 3.25
traction-lok center section that I will probably try first because it is
paid for. The AOD seems to have a much taller first gear
than the FMX. I believe I saw this documented somewhere, but I can't
remember where I found gear ratios for the FMX. That's probably why it has
the 3.00s from the factory. My guess is that the FMX is sturdier, but the
AOD can be made to live, esp. with a tranny cooler.
baumannengineering.com/ has a lot of info on AOD's, they
definitely reccommend using the latest possible year model. Or an AODE, but
then you have to
buy their computer module to retrofit into a early model without a computer.
I believe I spend about $400 plus the tranny to install with major expenses
being a cross-member from windsor-fox, a custom driveshaft, and the tranny
cooler
