hello all,
does the ring gear ( 8" ) of a 2.80 ratio have the same number of teeth
as a ring gear with a 3:25 ratio?
my 66 coupe is supposed to have a 2:80 gear (axle code on door tag is
6). i am refurbishing the rear end and have another hog head with 3:25 gears.
when i use the method of turning the pinion and counting the revolutions of
the ring gear, both hog heads come out the same -- 3.25 turns per one turn of
the ring gear. i counted the teeth on both ring gears and both have 39 teeth.
i have the ratio tag from my extra hog head and it does indeed say 3:25
. the rear end i pulled out of the car (original???) does not have a tag on
it. Maybe a previous owner has swapped the hog heads before and i already
have a 3:25 ratio?
the car has a c4 trans if it helps...trans code on door tag is
also 6, so i know that is correct
any ideas?? i am completely stumped now.....
thanks in advance....

Jason,
If you have a shop manual it gives you the number of teeth on each gear.
I'm at work and don't have it here. If you don't get an answer from someone
soon I'll see if I can't figure it out.
I'm putting 3.25's in my 9" and pulling the 2.80's this winter...

Probably not.

Then they are both 3.25 If the ring gear has 39 teeth, the pinion has 12
for a 3.25 ratio (39/3.25 = 12) You can't get 2.80 with a 39 tooth ring gear
because 39/2.8 = 13.93 . So what gears would give a 2.80 ratio?
The only possible combos I see are 28/10 or 42/15.. I'd guess 28/10.

I think so....

Empirical observation usually is more accurate than "supposed to have"!
