I have another possible solution to the filler neck/gas nozzle
problem, FWIW.
Before many of the gas stations here began switching over to the newer
"bootless" vapor recovery nozzles (I now seek them out - they are 10
times easier to use than the booted variety), I had big problems with
my '68's filler, which almost seems to be on a downward slant.
I got one of those really big funnels with the bendable stem. The top
part is big and square, as if you could toss a plastic quart oil
container in upside down for quick oil fills. The tip is tapered (and
obviously had too small of a hole to make it worthy for gas filling),
but I was able to saw it off until it was just the right size to fit
into the filler neck. With the middle being flexible, it was easy to
bend it up so that the top part was on about a 45-degree angle. This
made it a cinch to just cram that big ol' nozzle in and let it fill at
full blast. No spills, no mess. ***Just make sure you're listening to
the gas when it begins to get into the car's filler neck so you can
STOP the flow of gas yourself (it won't auto shut-off)***. Wait a few
seconds for any gas to drip from the funnel into the filler neck and
toss it back into the trunk.
Haven't had to use it in quite a while, but I still keep it in the
trunk in case I'm confronted with an "unfriendly" nozzle.

I have found that by not trying to fill my gas tank to fast I never have a
problem
filling it. Just don't rush it.
