Hi folks,
Two questions;
1) First how can you tell the difference between the "little rug" and
the big?
2) In my car I have a 4 speed manual, that the former owner called the
little rug. The rear axle is a 9" with ratio 2:79. Although I got the
2:79 I think the car revs way to high at the 4th gear. Could this has to
do with the gear ratios in the tranny? If so, is it possible to change
it? BTW I got the original dimenisions tires.
Regards,
Mikael

The Toploader transmission is available with a small or large input
shaft, and a 28- or 31-spline output shaft. The big output shaft is
used on higher performance cars. The big input shaft is used with
certain higher performance big-block engines.
If you have the tag number, I can tell you what combination you have.
RUG, by the way, is part of the tag number for most Toploaders.
You can identify the big output shaft with the tranny in the car.
At the rear of the tail housing where the seal is fitted, it's bigger
on the 31-spline version. Noticably. Bigger enough that the shifter
mounting plate is beveled to clear it, if you've got the Hurst
shifter.
Have you checked your rear axle ratio yourself, or are you going by a
tag or door plate code?
