Just my .02 on the Flowmasters...
I have a pair on my '68 390. To me the sound is just about perfect;
barely noticeable on the highway (2500-3000rpm) but nice when on or
off the throttle. However, I have the 3-chamber ones and not the
2-chamber. My muffler guy strongly advised against the latter on a
non-catalyst car - they're likely to get you a ticket as well as
ringing in the ears. Also, I've got stock exhaust manifolds as opposed
to tube headers, another factor in the volume level as well (ever
notice how good glasspacks sound on a tri-y car, a la Shelby, and sort
of flatulent with cast iron manifolds?).
On my '65 A-code coupe, the Walker Dynomax's are just barely audible
(again, stock manifolds), kind of like a factory dual set-up.
In some areas it might seem like every Tom, Dick, and Harry has
Flowmasters; but more people around here (So Cal) seem to run the
turbos or glasspacks on their classic Mustangs. The Flowmasters seem
to be the favorite of every Yuppie twit with a pimped-out SUV. In any
event, exhuast systems, like everything else on a person's car, are a
matter of personal preference.

'65 coupe
'68 fastback (Bullitt replica)
'89 Merkur XR4Ti (hey, it's a Ford)
