I have this 9" rear that is making very loud and nasty noises.
It happens under load. It is fairly quiet when coasting. Louder as
the load increases. At highway speed it is deafening. The noise is
more of a low growl than a just a whine.
I pulled the filler plug and the axle is full of clean oil AND there
is clear silicone sealant oozing out all around the carrier gasket
suface. Somebody's been in there. I suspect it either ran dry due to
a leak, damaging the rear. They fixed the leak and refilled the
lube. OR, they took it apart for some other reason and didn't set it
up properly.
Any thoughts from the 9" gurus on whether the source of this noise is
the gears, bearings, and/or the setup?

Only way to really tell is to pull it out and look at it. You could take
the drive shaft off and see if there is to much end play and/or lateral
movement in the pinion. But, has easy as they are to get in and out you
might as well take it out and have it looked at. Do it soon be cause the
longer you wait the more expensive it will be to fix...or replace.
Actually, 9" rear ends are still pretty reasonable. 275.00 should buy you a
3.50 31 spline third member ready to roll. I recently picked up a 9"
Nodular 31 spline 3.73 posi with fresh bearings for 475.00 at a swap meet.
Talked the guy down from 600.00 as he was packing up to leave. If someone
doesn't get to the parts first, it is when you make your best deals. They
really don't won't to load all that stuff back up.
