How much difference does the style of the "tail pipe tip" make when comparing the sound/tone/drone/loudness differences "inside the car?"
turn downs, just before of the valance?
straight, under and beyond the valance?
straight, through and beyond the valance?
...Either straight - any difference when stopped before the bumper, or stopped at/under the bumper?
turn out to the side, in front of the tire?
turn out to the side, behind the tire?
...Either turn out - any difference being angled to the rear, or straight out?
The listers that have a similar exhaust set up like mine, on an engine like mine, but maybe not a convertible, state their systems do not produce a large amount of drone - feeding back into the car.
Some do state that their systems are loud, but do not report major drone noise issues (could they be going deaf, eh?, whad-u-say??).
Anyway, this made me think about some of my previous cars...
I have an example: Renault, Elf, 4-door, 2.4L - I4. (>15 years ago)
I replaced the rotted muffler with a straight piece of pipe (from the behind the axle out the back beyond the rear valance, even with the rear edge of the bumper) and the sound in the driver's seat was quiet.
This same car had that same segment replacement with a formed piece - which had a slight angle down (~30 degrees) in the last 6 inches and the tip cut on angle at the end, the cut was level with the ground when installed and ended behind the valance but not beyond the bumper - this second piece caused a specific RPM range to resonate back into the car. Mostly noticed on the highway.
- - In the driver's seat you could noticed it but it was not, in any way, annoying. However, in the back seat it seemed rather loud.
Any thoughts? Experiences? possibilities???
Please let your thoughts flow freely, don't let them be bottled up, or restricted to silence...
TIA
