I have a 68 coupe with a 289-2V. Currently the exhaust system is all stock,
single exhaust. I would like to install a new exhaust system and go to dual
exhaust. My questions are;
Do I need to replace the headers or will the dual exhaust systems bolt up to
the original headers?
Would you recommend a stainless steel exhaust system?
The engine is in need of a rebuild and burns some oil. Will this damage the
new exhaust system? I plan on rebuilding the engine next year and need new
mufflers now.
My goal for the exhaust system is to create a nice deep throaty sound, but
not too loud. Would like to be able to hear the radio without having to
blast it too loud.
Thanks, for all your help.

Hey Marc, when you say 'original headers' you mean the stock factory
log style manifolds right?
No, you will not need to change those manifolds to go to duals.

How long do you plan to keep the car? How many extra banana's will
it cost, how often do you drive the car, in winter, salty roads?
I believe this issue is for longevity not performance.

I wouldn't think so, how much oil?
If you planed to go w/ headers after the rebuild, put them on
now so your exhaust will not have to be altered later to line up
w/ the longer headers. A rebuild will not effect your exhaust system
unless you change the manifolds. So if your going to change manifolds,
do it now. If you're not into headers, you might look into trading
the 289/302 log style for early 351W manifolds.
