Excellent , we seem to be back in operation again ..
I have the motor out of my 69 Mach 1 and am in the process of cleaning up
the engine bay and most of the bits that mount in and on it.
My question is this. Once Ive degreased and generally cleaned up the bay I
plan to spray it in satin black . Is everything in the bay factory painted
in the same satin, or are some items in gloss black?.. ie bonnet hinges,
radiator, and starter solenoid and engine mounts being some items I noticed
that are currently in gloss... Should they be and are there others?
Cheers, Wal

If it's available to you, Krylon 1613 semi-flat black works very well and
should match up to the factory "chassis black". The radiator tank is shiny
IIRC, but I'd only dust the radiator face and back because paint will get in
the way of heat exchange. The solenoid has a plastic body. I never paid
that much attention to the hinges.

Wal, I checked my detailing resource book (1964 1/2 - 1973 Mustang Detailing
Guide, by K. A. Helm) and found that the only item on your list that is
painted gloss black is the radiator. The engine mounts and the entire starter,
including the solenoid, are semi-gloss black. The only other engine
compartment item I see in the book that is painted gloss black is the power brake
booster. The hinges are "natural, (gray) phosphate & oil". Everything else
black in the engine compartment, other than the firewall and inner fenders are
semi-gloss black. The firewall and inner fenders are "semi-gloss black with
flattener".
Hope this helps. If you have questions about other specific items, please
let me know.

Thanks for that Jim, very helpful.
Does the book have any comment about the master cylinder. I painted it
silver (Booster in gloss black so i got that right!) when it was rebuilt
about 6 months ago.. should that be semi gloss black?. Im loath to leave it
unpainted (as it may have been from new) as it starts rusting almost
immediately.

There are those that swear by Krylon semi-flat black out of an aerosol can. It's more than good; it's damn good. But personally, I prefer the Eastwood Co.'s Underhood Black. It's a very high solids paint that holds up to the tough environment under the hood better than anything else I've seen. It costs a little more ($6/can) but it's worth it.
For Engine Compartment detailing help, google "John Dettori" and you'll find the article I did for several Mustang club newsletters on weekend engine compartment detailing (I'm on the road at work and don't have a copy of the article). Or wait for the Nov or Dec issue of Legendary Fords Magazine and see the 1970 Boss 302 article I'm contributing.
