Edelbrock heads vs Trickflow heads

Hi All,
Time has come to begin purchasing parts for my 331stroker. I want to start off by getting the most expensive parts first, while I'm still single...haha. My question goes out to you guys that have had aluminum head experience. I know Edelbrock has a nice top end kit with all the goodies to match. But I'm kinda leaning toward Trickflow heads. Done a little research on the Trickflows and I'm curious as to how the valve positioning makes so much difference. Has anyone had experience with both types of heads, and if so, which would you prefer. As for a cam......I'm still kinda debating on a couple different lifts and durations. But leaning toward this Comp Cam store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA%2D31%2D432%2D8&autoview=sku Really not looking to go over 5500RPM. Shoot......5000RPM is screaming enough! Now, I only have a 2 bolt main block bored .030 over. So even 5000 is pushing it. What do you pros think? Thanks for any input on this build. This will be my first high performance build. Built many stockers and mild ones, but nothing with aluminum heads and rollerized top end. I've got a lot of homework to do. That's O.K. I have plenty of time. Being temporarily disabled, time is all I have. LOL Keeps my mind off the pain and aggravation.

Thanks David. I appreciate your input. Very helpful. Right now, I'm trying to choose a descent crank. Looking for a forged one, but Summit doesn't show one for the Eagle. Only a Summit or Scat forged stroker crank. I'm doing the Summit store, so I don't have to pay freight. They are only an hour away from me..:-) I can get in serious trouble there. LOL

If you're holding the rpm's down like that, the TF heads will be great. The Vic Jr's will be oversized for decent street driving at 210cc runners. I've had both - but in very different applications. Although you have a stroker (and they like port volume with flow due to piston dwell and speed) a 331 is very low on the crank angle situation that calls for it. TF's will be more than enough to 6500 rpm or so. They breathe better due to better alignment of the valve with the intake and exhaust port, sort-of like the Cleveland and Lima heads, but far less extreme. This reduces the sharp curve at the dogleg of the runner/port intersection that kills flow. they are also 'pre-ported' with nice work on the ones I've had.

If you had a more demanding application I'd consider others, but for this I'd be very happy with the TFTW heads, even with considerable upgrading in the future. I run the TW heads on my street 427w stroker and am very happy with them. If I were to use it at the strip at all, I'd go with the VJs, but it's a big engine and I only spin it to 6000 to be safe. BTW - your cam looks like a nice choice. I don't know how your pistons will spec out, but I'm running 10.6:1 compression on the TF heads and 92 octane very comfortably.

I don't have any real experience but I'd definitely
recommend a read of some very extensive tests done
by MM&FF a few years back. Group 1 covers street
heads, group 2 street/strip, group 3 strip, and
group 4 all out race. The group 2 seems similar to
your build (331 stroker) and includes the base
twisted wedge head. The Vic JR and higher flow TW
heads are in group 3 but I think running on a
351 stroker (418ci). Scroll down to the end of the
Air Flow research articles archive and you'll find
links to the scanned articles.
