> Where would one start redoing a car that had been underwater for a few days?
This got me thinking.. what WOULD I do with car that had been under muddy water for a few days...maybe some thoughts would be useful for those faced with it now or in the future...
Here are some initial thoughts..based on trying to get the car operational as soon as possible.. not for fanatics or show cars....
1. Waterblast clean everything that can be cleaned, to remove mud etc.
2. Dry out the whole car, removing carpets, seats, and interior panels and instrument panel, and headliner?
3. Drain engine, incl filter, transmission, diff, power steering. Note how much water comes out since that will indicate likely water and mud contamination. Gearbox and transmission may not have taken much in.. Refill.
4. Drain, refill and bleed brakes
5. Drain, Remove clean and refit fuel tank. Flush the lines, fuel pump and carb.
6. Remove brake drums and waterblast out any mud. Linings should be OK unless there is evidence of oil contamination..
7. Remove and wash mud out of alternator, starter, and instrument panel, radio, head and tail light etc. Some of it may be recoverable.
8. Remove engine tappet covers and flush the engine down with thin oil until the drain plug runs clean. With fresh oil in the engine turn it over on the starter for 30 seconds or so. Drain and refill. Fit new filter each time.
9. Fit new door panels head liner, and seat covers as necessary. Many maybe just fine once washed and dried out?
10. Reassemble, bleed fuel system and see whats working electrically.. remove, replace, clean as required. Replace voltage regulator for sure.
11. Test run around the block and again drain and refill engine, transmision and diff..
What have I forgotten guys.. heaps no doubt... ? someone must have done this....?

I'll go ahead and pull the top of the engine off. We know that at least a couple of valves were open making it likely that a couple of cylinders are full of mud and stuff - none of it ggod for cyclinder walls and rings

Indeed!! and that's something I forgot about..! Removing the heads would be best if you have time.. if not..perhaps
Pull the plugs, flush each cylinder with a tube pushed to the bottom and feed compressed air to blast out water and dry it, then blow in some light engine oil and leave to soak. But whatever you do...do soon as possible to stop rust corroding the bores and rings.

This list you put up would be a great thing for the "mustang wiki" list
Moose set up.
Also, we have had some good long discussions on cooling and charging
systems lately - I don't really understand how to do the wiki's but
maybe we could get this started ??

Just one more thing, that I don't think I saw mentioned: under NO
circumstance should you EVER try to turn over a drowned car's motor (just
to "see if it turns over" - I've heard that one before!) before at least
the spark plugs are removed. Failure to do that could cause a water-filled
cylinder on it's compression stroke to break things like rods, pistons, etc..

How about staring in utter disbelief and mumbling curses?
Do you guys get this sort of weather over that way?

I might be inclined not to mumble the curses!!

If you mean New Zealand yes unfortunately we certainly do get our winds and floods from time to time...
There was a popular video clip circulating on the internet earlier this year of a house being uplifted complete rolled out like it was in wheels and dumped into a suburban street... that was home in New Zealand... but no Mustangs were harmed in the making of that Movie...

I have no experience here but intuition tells me that salt water
immersion will do much more harm to an engine (or any mechanical
devise) than fresh water. Curious to know how yours turns out...keep
us posted. And good luck!
