Anyone upgraded to disc brakes on a '66 V-8 and used the conversion kit
where you don't have to use new spindles?

Just a thought... over a 2 year period I had both of my original 68
mustang spindles fail on my daily driver mustang, one while I was on
the freeway. Although it does seem to be rare it does happen, I had
a few folks email me telling me they also had experience with spindle
failures. Based on that experience I would suggest you consider
upgrading to the 70-up beefier spindles, or a minimum have your old
spindles magnafluxed.

Or go with the Granada spindles and Granada swap.

Now that is interesting.

The way my Mustang has been acting
reciently, once I get the current issues fixed, I bet this will happen to
me.

This place sells granda and 70 mustang spindle based kits, with new
spindles... prices seem reasonable.
discbrakeswap.com

The mustang spindle kits are new since the last I checked their
website. An interesting thing is the have spindles that have the 70
style large spindle, but with the correct 66 geometry. I believe
the granada/70-mustang spindles will bolt into a 64-66 but the
geometry is not the same.

note: I have not used their kits/parts, but it looks like an
interesting option. Using stock style parts means you can easily
find replacement rotors/pads/etc when needed.

Other options for upgraded beefier spindles would be used/ebay, TCP,
Cobra Automotive, hotrodsusa.com and I think a few of the mustang
catalogs now sell new spindles.

If I was going to stick with stock drum spindles I would consider a
kit like this one from mustang steve, which uses larger late model
mustang rotors. Again, making it easy to get replacement parts.

mustangsteve.com/cobrabrakes.html

note that I have not actually used these kits, but the do look like
an interesting option to me.

My idea of an ultimate solution would be mustang steve's kit (or
something similar) with 70-up drum spindles... unfortunately as far
as I know nobody is reproducing the 70-up drum spindle (too bad since
there seems to be more high performance options for the drum
spindles), so you have to find good ones used. Cobra Automotive has
used ones in their catalog -- their kits also use the drum spindles.

Just finished the install on my 68 with a kit from MP Brakes. The kit is set up to install on your spindles. I had already converted over to the 70 spindles after an unforuate incident were my driver side spindle decided to split in half about 4 years ago. The bearing locked up and sheared the spindle. Luckily I was only going about 30MPH. The 68 rotors or drums mount up to the '70 spindles, but you must use the '70 bearings.

The MP brakes kit was complete and I did not have to go to the parts store to get anything. It even came with the bearings for both the 68 and the 70 spindles. The only thing that I had to order was a new brake line kit for the front, as 40 year old metal brake lines do not like to come off with out rounding off. Other than that the install was really easy.

Here is the kit for the 66.
