We run open breathers on our race car. The only advantage I can see is
a slight horsepower gain from *not* diluting the intake fuel charge
with crankcase vapers.

On the street, ( and to pass any smog check) PCV is better for all of
us Air breathing mammals. And as you noted, it keeps the engine
cleaner (externally and the oil)
