I have a 67 Coupe with a 289 in it currently. (Originally it had a 6cyl, but
the old owner changed that out). My first question is what kind of horse
power can this generate stock? What would need to be done to get this into
the 300+ hp range?

I am currently in the tear down stage, lots of little _things_ that need to
be taken care of. I will be removing the engine for a rebuild and the C4
(because it is shot). So, I was thinking that might be a good time to
change engines. Someone today offered me a 390 from a 68 mercury monterey
and was wondering what kind of problems I might encounter putting this
engine in (if it is even possible.) What things need to be changed? Will
this mount up to the C4 or do I need a completely different tranny?

Any help with these questions will be greately appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

needless to say, it sounds like your in for a lot of work! I personally
hate working in cramped engine compartments and always recommend going no
larger than a 351..... to much weight and you can get the power and torque
out of a smaller motor with a little work (usually less than the other
route)

first of all, you need to decide what you want to do with the car when its
done (street, strip, open track, autocross). Each one of these setups will
require changes to the motor (power curve) and suspension (brakes, shocks,
springs, steering). If you choose to make a drag car, you have chosen to
not do an open track car (the two are not interchangeable).

a 289 can produce well over 300hp. Some things to consider before you
start.....

don't bore the motor out all the way since it will get the already
inherently hot running motor hotter (mine was bored 60 over by the previous
idiot, I mean owner. Get it cleaned up with new this and that.... the more
power the more you need to beef up the internals.

cooling system is a priority if you want reliability.

A good head job and open exhaust will yield huge results with this motor.
The 289 heads are the best flowing heads ever made by Ford..... many people
use these heads on their blueprinted 302s....

If you want 400+hp, go get a roots style blower (eaton, kenny bell)....
450-500hp no problem

if you have a really good motor, don't screw it up by running Nitrous....

don't forget the suspension in all this...... trees are not mustang
friendly

I am starting my 289 tonight for the first time in three months..... I
figure I should be in the 275-325 hp range right now and 375-425 with my
blower when I get it. THis will be more than enough power for autocross and
open track. I will continue to focus on my suspension.

Assuming it has passenger car heads, with 8 bolt (top/bottom) exhaust
manifolds, you'll never get manifolds or headers for it in the Mustang

Stick with the 289. Or go 351W.
