Hey guys and gals!
(Sorry to those of you who got this twice, it was also posted to the
Fordnatics mailing list)

I am curious to find out the approximate cost of some cylinder heads mods.
The set of heads are for a 68 289, casting #C8OE, As I understand it, they
have 63 cc chambers and 1.67/1.45 valves. How much do y'all think it will cost
to upgrade to 1.94/1.60 valves and add 3/8 screw in studs? It currently has
the useless press in studs and the vavle guides are brand new I don't know if
you have to replace them?. How about a good machine shop near San Jose, CA?
One last question, if the compression ratio for pistons is given for a 58 cc
head, ie, 9.6:1 for 58cc how much lower would it be for a 63cc head?
Thanx in advance
Marcus Miller

By 1968, the heads came with 1.78" intake valves; but that's still small.

Depending on the options you choose, you could spend $300 - $1,000+ on the heads.
You havemany choices: First off, PAW sells a '65-67 casting #s set of Ford heads
with 1.94"/1.60" valves,
screw in studs, 3-angle valve job, bronze valve guides, new springs & seals for
$499 shipped to
you. That's cheaper than any machine shop, but you'd be advised to by a cam kit
from PAW,
and have them install those springs on the heads. Don't remember combustion
chamber size, but
a standard piston will yield around 9:1 compression, while a pop-up will yield 10+
-11:1. It's a
good; deal-check out their ad in any of the Mustang rags.

I went with my machine shop installing 1.94"/1.60" valves, 3-angle valve job,
hardened exhaust seats,
bronze guides, screw-in studs, Competittion cams roller rockers, springs, seals,
and a pocket port job,
for $650 plus I had to provide the cam kit. BTW, the same guy is doing the rest
of the rebuild on my
motor, so I believe the price is better than an "a la carte" job. These prices
are in Long Island, NY,
and I suspect would be cheaper in places like CA, etc.

Jeff Speegle,can you help?

Marcus, a couple of good books have cross-useage tables for different heads on
different motors, i.e
if you put the 49.5cc head (from a '63 260) on a '65 HiPo you get 11.6:1
compression, etc.

You'll find it in 1) "How To Rebuild Your Small Block Ford" by Tom Monroe
(HPBooks)
2) "Ford Performance" by Pat Gahnal (SA Design)
3) "Muscle Parts Guide 65-70" (Ford)

Hope this helps!
