Well, just because I had the time..
When I drained my system, through only the radiator drain valve...
I got out roughly 2 gallons of water...
This is a 302 with a 4-row radiator... So, I'd call the capacity roughly 3
3/4 gallons...
Hmmm, so if I add a 3/4 gallon of straight coolant, then start adding a
50-50 mixture, I'll be OK...

Assuming that you got out 2 gallons and you have nearly a 4 gallon capacity
you'll need almost 2 gallons of coolant to make it 50/50. I'd add at least
1.5 gallons of coolant and try to get another 1/4 gallon in after you start
it and the thermostat opens.

Sorry Gang, I haven't followed this thread. What is the correct
coolant capacity for a stock radiator, stock heater core and a
289 engine (1966 vintage)?
