Converting To Dual Exhaust

I have a '65 289 coupe that I want to convert from single to dual
exhaust. I would like to change to the GT style (tail pipes
through the valence) while adding a set of Tri-Y headers. What
special parts do I need? I think that I need a special H-pipe for
the Tri-Y's, and 2 special pipes for the GT exhaust. I'm not sure
about this, though. Please help!

Nick-

This is a pretty easy swap, as all the parts are available from mot Mustang
pats vendors. A few points:

- Be care ful on the Tri-Y headers -there are more than one company
reproducing them, and the quality varies. The ones I got (about 10 years ago)
were the "cheaper' ones for sale at the time, and they needed a little
dimpling to fit on the passenger side next to the shock tower. If you can
afford the coated ones, get them. Otherwise, I highly recommend sandblasting
them and painting with the Eastwood Stainless steel paint

- there is an H-pipe specifically for use with the headers- don't let someone
sell you the "factory" dual pipe by telling you to cut it up yourself.

- use the factory type hangers to have it fit best.

The Tri-Y headers made by Pro Products are good. They used to be
available through Maier Racing.

Also, keep the middle leg of your H-pipe are short as possible and as
close to the end of the headers as you can. It works best that way.

Another *very* important point is that, aside from all the expensive
exhaust parts you'll have to add, you will also need to change *all* your
rear brake lines (including the one that runs from the front to rear of the
car) and the rear brake hose -- and weld a used or fabricated mounting
bracket where the hose & line connect. Otherwise the clearance (if any)
between the brake hose and very hot exhaust probably won't be enough to
keep the rubber from melting...
