I want to put an AOD in my Mach 1. I am replacing the FMX.
Here is what I think I need:
Crossmember
Speedometer cable
Shift rod
Shortened drive shaft
Anything Else? Are there any good websites?
Thanks
Don Franck

Don, The link below is a good place to start. One thing to remember on =
this transmission: TV Pressure it Critical. Repeat that three times. =
It would be a good idea to think about placing a pressure guage in the =
instrument area so that this pressure can be monitored any time that an =
idle adjustment (or anything else) is done to the carb.=20
I swapped a C4 for an AOD and had to acquire the following:
TV cable (a kickdown rod will not do the trick)
Shift rod
New rear gears. (Overdrive tended to falter with the 2:74's, went to =
3:25's and it's happy)
New speedometer gear.
Exhaust system had to be moved, the AOD is wider.
Modification to driveshaft (shortened)
Crossmember has to be moved to the rear

More thoughts on the AOD. When mine was built, the guys put the =
planetary from a 4R70W (wide ratio), the larger A servo, and did the =
AOD-E band swap, and also had me modify the forward and direct clutches =
to accept an extra clutch pad and steel. The modification envolves =
cutting a new snap ring groove in the housing. Any competent machine =
shop can handle this for you. The end result of all of this is a tranny =
that will last longer and pull harder than original.

Long time list member Dan Jones had a write up and it got
published on the Bob's vintage mustang site. I just checked
and the link isn't active. Bummer.
For our newer members, Dan spent his 1994 Christmas vacation
installing an AOD in his parent's c4 equipped 71 Mustang and wrote
up the conversion. I might be useful for your conversion.
[a quick google search...]
Here is Dan's writeup:

Have fun!

Don,
Just curious, why replace the FMX? It's a pretty tough transmission,
'though not a racing part. My 70 Mach I has gotten years of trouble
free use with it. I must admit, I have a bias towards restoration to
factory specs, but what do you gain by using the AOD? Does it offset
the cost of the unit, associated parts, the fabrication involved and the
labor? Wouldn't it be worth it to get your FMX fixed or "worked"?

I want to put an AOD in my Mach 1. I am replacing the FMX.
Here is what I think I need:
Crossmember
Speedometer cable
Shift rod
Shortened drive shaft
Anything Else? Are there any good websites?
Thanks

Don,
Just curious, why replace the FMX? It's a pretty tough transmission,
'though not a racing part. My 70 Mach I has gotten years of trouble
free use with it. I must admit, I have a bias towards restoration to
factory specs, but what do you gain by using the AOD? Does it offset
the cost of the unit, associated parts, the fabrication involved and the
labor? Wouldn't it be worth it to get your FMX fixed or "worked"?

I'd have to put my vote in for the FMX too. Had one in my '69 GT in 1982
and have one now in my '69 Mach 1 currently being restored. The FMX will be
going right back in. BUT if I drove it as a long distance on the freeway
daily driver I'd think twice.
