I've got two problems I need some help with. The first is does anybody
have any ideas how to adjust a 64 1/2 convetible top? Mine sets too
far towards the drivers side...I can't close the door without lifting
the edge of the top. Any suggestions or even good book recommendations
would be appreciated.
Secondly, I was trying to put my 3-speed back into the car and couldn't
get the stinkin' thing to go back in. After the first futile attempt
we realized the clutch plate had gotten out of line, so we got a
clutch alignment tool and fixed that problem. Tried for several
hours with no luck. As far as I can tell the splines are lined up
but there doesn't seem to be any physical way to get the silly thing
to go back in. Is there something else we should look at? Something
we're doing wrong? The throw-out bearing was giving us fits for a
while but we put some pressure on the clutch fork and it stopped
sliding around so much. The main bearing seems fine, so I don't
think it is problem. Anyway, anything you've got would be GREATLY
appreciated.
Thanks,
Jonathan Plummer

Take a look at the pilot bearing, when you were working it in the first
time, you might have damaged it, if it is peened over a tad, you will
need to replace it. Hope this helps you. Also, you might try rotating
the tranny from side to side while installing.

A remote possibility... But one that occurred to me... Unfortunately,
to do this you basically have to "start over". Are you sure that
1) your clutch plate has the right splines for your input shaft?
(This was my problem... My ST-10 had a Chevy input shaft because
it was a little stronger... I had mentioned this to the people
(McLeod) that were doing the clutch rebuild... they just forgot...
and gave me a Ford center piece... Drove me nuts... and a cast
iron ST-10 is not the kind of tranny you want to be "tossing in
and out" (I was doing this on the ground, in a parking lot...)
2) is the pilot bearing in the end of your crank the right one
for your tranny?
Give us more of a hint... How close are you to getting it in
car? 1/4 inch (probably having trouble getting the front of
the tranny to mate with the bell housing, 1/2 inch (likely the
pilot bearing) 1 1/2 inch (or so, probably the clutch disk),
larger than that (you're back to trouble with the throwout
bearing... it should slide really easy on the input shaft,
no binding, in fact, it should be *really* loose, almost sloppy.

Johnathon,
Did you try the shop manual for a procedure for aligning the convertible
top? When I restored my '67 conv, I completely removed the top from the
body, ripped off the old fabric, painted the metal frame, and then
reinstalled the frame and aligned it. Finally, I took it to the upholstery
shop to get the new fabric installed. I believe that I used the procedure
listed in the '67 Ford shop manual.
BTW, I did have to replace several of the plastic (nylon?) bushings in the
metal frame assembly. If you have a broken bushing, that might be the
cause of your problems.

I've got two problems I need some help with. The first is does
anybody have any ideas how to adjust a 64 1/2 convetible top? Mine
sets too far towards the drivers side...I can't close the door
without lifting the edge of the top. Any suggestions or even good
book recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jonathan Plummer
