Ok, I picked up the 65 convertible this morning. So far, I love it! It
turns a LOT more heads than my 66 coupe!

But there is a problem with the top, I think there must be some sort of
adjustment, but I can't find it.

When I put the convertible top up, the passenger side dowel pin goes into
place fairly easily.

But the driver's side takes Herculean effort to push it far enough forward
to put the dowel through the eye.

Are there any adjustments for this?

Thanks,

Lance Robaldo

Lance,

Congrats on the new ride! I've had my 65 convertible since 1980 and
I've parted with wives, dogs, and homes but never the convertible! I'm
not aware of any adjustments on the top but one thing you might want to
do is to make sure the top "mechanicals" are all lightly lubricated.
This means all the flex joints on the roof and down under the rear seat
cover panels. It might just need some lubrication and breaking in if it
hasn't been used in awhile.

Heck, summer is around the corner and you won't really need that top now
will you? <g>

Scott

Lance,
Believe it or not, at the moment I have three (3!) 65 convertibles (although
one is being shipped out this week). Although I haven't touched the tops in
while, before messing with the adjustment screws at the rear of the top frame,
if the header is actually sitting nicely on the windshield header, you may get
away with an easy fix.

The pins and hooks are either set screwed into the #1 bow assembly (front
frame) and set with a (obviously!) set screw, or with a crown nut. If you loosen
the set screw (or the nut), you can unscrew the pins a bit, and they will
stick out further, which may be enough to get them to hit the windshield header. I
can email you off line a jpeg out of the ford convertible top manual which
explains where they are. It is a common problem, and has its own trouble
diagnosis section which I am listing below, right out of the manual...

Malfunction-Dowel pins fall short of strinler plate causing difficulty in
clamping header

Probable cause-
A. Top operated with door and/or quarter windows raised.
B. front side rail hinge stop screw inproperly adjusted causing the side rail
to overcrown.
C. Body opening excessive
D. Balance link eccentric impropoerly adjusted.

Corrective action-
A.Door and quarter windows must always be lowered when raising the top to
prevent interference.
B. Adjust either or both hinge stop screws as necessary.
C. Reshim body bolts and spacers as necessary.
D. Refer to side rail to door glass adjusstment.

Good luck, let me know if you would like to see the bow assembly, windshield
header diagram.

Sounds great, I'll check out those possibilities this weekend.

You know, I'm pretty sure I DID have those windows up when I tried to raise
the top, that could very well be part of the problem. Never crossed my
mind.

For option "B", where are the "hinge stop screws"? If you have a drawing
pointing them out, could you scan it for me?

Thanks.

Lance
