I have a few questions, and I would appreciate any input...

-The center console of my 68 Mustang is missing screws. Can I just get
screws and fix this, or do I need to order the correct ones?

-I am also ordering a weatherstripping kit. Is this something I can
install myself, or should I take it somewhere to be installed?

-The cowl area is rusted on my car. What is involved in reparing this,
and would it be OK if I were to install and cowl cover and just leave it
as it is?

-When I push down on the gas, the car will begin to move, stop for a
second, and then accelerate. What could be causing this?

-When I start the car for the first time in a day or so, it will usually
start, and then die. Aftwe a few tries it runs, and I dont have this
problem for the rest of the day. Has anyone ever had a problem like
this, and how can I fix it?

Hi,
When I put my console in my 67 I just used screws that were long enough.
Remember that if you drill into the carpet it catches on the bit. Also, I
have a leak from my cowl area. However, the cost involved is not worth it to
me. I do not drive the car in the rain or snow so it does not matter at all.
If you do the same I would just throw the cowl cover in the trunk in case
you get caught in the rain.

Sounds like a properly tuned 289... ;-)
(But you didn't say which '68 Mustang engine you had...)

Seriously, my '66 does this (especially if you try to put it in gear
without letting it warm up) whenever I tune it to the factory specs.

Setting the idle slightly higher (one screw, on the linkage at the carb)
or advance the timing a bit, the problem is lessened ALOT. Also, if
your cold/high idle setting isn't high enough the problem is worse, and
you should probably adjust the high idle linkage (on the passenger side
of the carb) and/or choke.

It took me about 3 years of constant fiddling to find the exact
combination of settings for all the carb linkages, timing, points/dwell,
idle speed, etc. before I found a setting that gets decent (14.5-15) MPG
and doesn't have any annoying habits. Passes smog too. Be patient -
start with the factory specs and see what everything is set to on your
car - then start fiddling.

YOU DIDN'T MENTION UPPER OR LOWER, EITHER WAY I'M SURE THE CORRECT TYPE
WOULD LOOK THE BEST.

YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF, JUST TAKE YOUR TIME. 3M YELLOW WEATHERSTRIP IS
CLOSEST IN APPEARANCE TO FORD'S ADHESIVE.

IF YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF THE UNDERLYING RUST IT WILL CONT TO GET WORSE
AND WILL COT YOU MORE IN THE LONG RUN. BEST LEFT TO A PRO.

SOUNDS LIKE THE DIAPHRAGM IN THE ACCELERATER PUMP IS BAD, REBUILD THE
CARB, KIT CONTAINS NEW DIAPHRAGM.

If your cowl is fairly rusted check your torque boxes to make sure
they are in good shape. Cowl leaks are the leading cause of rusted out
T-boxes.
