Clutch Linkage

Hello All,

My clutch linkage broke on my 64 1/2, 289, A/C, no power steering. I believe
the the part that broke is called the equalizer bar. It's actually the bar
that goes down from the equalizer bar. This in turn is connected to a push
bar that presses back on the clutch fork.

I had to let the local Ford Dealer fix it, and when they couldn't get the
part, they just welded the bar back on. They didn't charge me anything, but
now to my question.

Is that bar supposed to be perpendicular to the equalizer bar hinge point or
slightly canted or curved toward the engine. The reason that I ask is that
there seems to be a bit too tight of an angle for the push rod to press
against the fork efficiently. Also, is the pin on the inside (engine side)
of the bar or the outer side?

On my 66 convertible, the bar is slightly canted at the axle shaft (about
30°) and parallel to the direction of movement where the rod connects to
it.

This linkage is one of the poorest engineered items, I ever saw. It has so
many places where it will develop play and rattle over the years. It can
also bind if the pedal free play is improperly adjusted (Pedal staying
halfway down after release). The Ford engineers must have designed this on
a friday afternoon or monday morning ;-) I'll upgrade mine to a hydraulic
linkage and TO bearing someday.
