Clunk in the rear end

Scott, I can't say for sure, but your problem sounds very similar to the
one that I had. I've owned my '65 Mustang since 1970, and that clunk has
been with the car for as long as I can remember. Well, I took the car into
the shop that I use to replace the rear axle gear to a 3.50:1, and they
found what that problem was. Evidently the carrier was pretty shot, and
was just upon the verge of failure. If you're contemplating an axle
change, now might be the time to do it.
