A new twist--my odometer is stuck at 76000.9. Could the clicking be the
odometer or is the stuck odometer caused by the cable?

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? 8)

Before tackling the replacement... One thing that happened
to my '65 is that the nut connecting the cable to the dash backed
off a bit... When I tightened it up, the clicking went away...

Worth a check... But from what you described, I'd bet bad
cable too...

Probably the cable Paul. Check and repair as noted by other posters and try
it. If you still have the problem smiling smiley then step 2...check out your odometer.
