It's
okay you guys. I had not heard that expression either. I guess it's
confusing because there is no real correlation between chalk and
cheese. They aren't even opposites. Hmmm. Now I will have to ponder
this one for the rest of the day. Probably keep me up late trying to
figure it out.

This thread is goin' weird here.? Lizards on a rock for lunch, who knows.
Like trying to find a rat snake in a rope store.
My 1/50 of a USD.? 10.5:1 is about the max on current US pump gas. That's
what my 351C-4V race engine runs and it runs well on local 91 with one step
colder plugs (#24 Autolite).? The engine is set up with a zero deck height
and a .039 Felpro blue gasket and 65 cc chambers.? I run a solid cam in that
engine and I can tell you that after a year of hard racing - about 450
rounds - and the lash opened up from around .022 to about .026.? It's a
Crane 238/248 cam.? It has a lot of overlap, so the engine runs a lot of
timing - 38 locked out.? The 302 would likely do well with a similar
duration cam but with a bit less overlap for a more manageable idle - maybe
a 110 or 112 lobe center vs the 108 on this one.?
So I say BAH to the idea that a solid is not reliable or requires a lot of
upkeep.? When properly adjusted, they make very little noise.? Besides - a
Boss 302 is a solid lifter engine by design so its SUPPOSED to have that
little "buzz" at idle.? It a signature feature.? If you use quality parts
(RIP Crane Cams) you will have no maintenance or reliability issues.? Roller
rockers are also a good idea - IIRC, the Boss 302 heads use a screw in stud..
If so, I would recommend either Scorpion or Harland Sharp rockers.? The HS
rockers are warranteed for life.? If you have an issue with one, they'll
replace it.? I run them in both race engines - good parts.
Check with Probe on the pistons - they offer a .030, might be less money to
have them just machine a set to .040

Subject: [CM] Boss 302 Makeover
Friends,
I sent this Friday eveing but didn't get any responses; not sure if it
bounced.? My apologies if you get it twice.
You all have helped me at one time or another; I'd like to solicit some
opinions here.? Please send your thoughts.
My 1970 Boss 302 is undergoing a makeover.? I am addressing a few areas,
including the motor.? Though it has less than 50K miles, I suspected the
motor needed a rebuild -? and it did.? A reputable local machine shop (owned
by a Ford fan) is handling the rebuild chores.? He recommended 2 internal
modifications / upgrades that I'd like to air here:
1) Lower compression by a 1/2 point.? This would take the Boss' factory
11.0:1 compression down to 10.5:1.? The machine shop says this will help the
car run better on 91-93 octane pump gas, and not need the CAM2 110 octane
fuel I've been shoveling out $8/gallon for.? He's also complementing this
with stainless steel valves and hardened exhaust seats.? He is telling me
that there will be no noticable drop in power, estimating at least 400bhp at
the flywheel.?
2) Hydraulic Cam: The machine shop recommended the hydraulic cam for less
maintenance, less wear and tear, quieter operation, and the availability of
cams that duplicate the exact factory set-up in a hydraulic version or
improve performance, leveraging the 40 years of experience we gained since
the Boss 302 debued.? The thought of adding a set of roller-tip rockers
crossed my mind as well.
I'm adding a pertronix ignitor to the distributor, running a new set of BFG
TA Radials and keeping the rev limiter disconnected.? But I don't consider
those mods.
My initial reactions was to stick to the factory guidelines.? The machine
shop (Big Sal's Racing Engines) did a good job when they rebuilt the 351C-4V
in my '70 Mach I, so I trust this guy.? I made him put the 351C-4V back to
exact stock specifications - he even used a Ford dealer rebuild kit where
everything came in a Ford box (with TRW pistons, etc.).? The motor ran
strong and seemed OK on 93 octane fuel (it was 11.0:1 as well).? But I'm
somewhat reluctant to give up the solid lifter cam and 11.0:1 compression
for what I think are more emotional than rational reasoning.?
I'd like to hear some opinions.? As of this writting, it appears that I will
have to have a set of custom pistons manufactured, because no one has a
0.040" over Boss 302 piston on the shelf.? I checked PAW, Summit, JEGS, and
called Federal Mongul (that was an adventure).? So, since I'm shelling out
about a grand just for the pistons, this is not about saving a few bucks.
But I would like an answer before the guy orders the pistons this week and
I'm locked in to the 10.5:1 compression ratio.
Also, what was the correct fan for the 1970 Boss 302?? The car came with a 5
blade 17-1/2" diameter clutch fan that I can't find a part number on.? It
fits in the fan shroud I've looked thru 30 books and best I've found is 2
separate pictures: one with a clutch fan and one without.? Can anyone
provide a picture (attach, link, tell me where to find it), or even a part
number?? The spacer as well.
Thanks!
John
