my 69 mustang has the four headlight system. I pulled them out and went to Murrays Auto and bought halogens. They provide far more light than the old bulbs. I also used stronger bulbs in my taillights. and dash

As a plus - that same article actually did side-by-side comparisons for the halogen, incandescent, and some other sealed type ( I think)

I've used the Bosch and Hella E-code headlights with H4's (and H1 bulbs
in 4-lamp sytems). Pop right in with no changes but suggest the relay
upgrade as mentioned on this list before. Love 'em. The standard
55w/65w is a huge improvement over sealed halogens but wattages to over
100 are availble along with blue and yellow versions. I have not tried
more recent DOT-type bling-bling models.

Anyone have a scan of the article to post? Some direct comparisons
would be great.

Probably have a wheel cylinder locking up or you might have one that refuses
to work at all, leading to brakes on one corner. A car that sits for any
time - especially two years - needs to have the brakes gone through
completely. Brake fluid like water and water corrodes parts. I'd replace
everything but the drums, steel lines and backing plates - and replace the
drums if they can't be turned while eyeing the steel lines suspiciously.

Yes, I've done it - works well on my 1971, convertible.
...even without the add on, relay type, wiring harness the light is better with the H4/9003 replacement lense and bulb set up.
HOWEVER, (there is always a however) watch what company you pick your lenses from - some do not have DOT legal lenses.
But, this may only be a factor if you aim them incorrectly, thereby drawing attention to your lights, which could get you a ticket for illegal lenses.

I ran a "Z" beam, Cebie (DOT legal) lense, for years. One Broke, so, I replaced both. Internal lense oxidation on the old ones was only apparent in a side by side comparison, they were ~25 years old.

Also - H4 bulbs are identicle to 9003 bulbs. This information straight from Sylvania. One is marketed for motorcycles and the like, the other is the "auto industry" designation - they are the same bulb.
...Buy the one that is least expensive, in the light type you want - straight halogen, up grade blue, super fancy high brightness, etc. - just make sure you stay witht he 55/60 watt bulb for street legal use.

****Do not get the "high watt" bulbs, 90/100 watt rated, (one) they are not legal on the street and (two) your stock head light system will not handle them without the add on harness.

Did I mention that you should aim your head lights, no?
Always check head light aim when you replace a lamp or lense - nothing is exatly the same, so, please re-aim!

ugh - sorry - I ran out of time last night (had to pack and study for final today...) Going to San Jose, Ca for training for work and won't be back for a week. sad smiley

If anyone else is a subscriber to Mustang and Fords magazine, I think that article ran between 3-6 months ago... their site may have it. But if you can wait - I'll be back next wednesday night.

The gist of the article was the upgrade was worth the safety, but a relay harness (and potentially an alternator upgrade) is recommended to prevent wires from melting.

Sorry about that - I saw my two boxes of prior copies this morning on my way out the door and actually considered packing em... smiling smiley
