Paul,
Actually both are correct. The assembly line directive from Ford was
that the blackout was to either stop at the pinch-weld that divides the cowl
area from the firewall (your shock tower braces bolt onto this) or to
continue to the top of the front face of the cowl area. I think a lot of
them stopped at the pinch weld, as it was a convenient dividing line. The
important thing is, whichever you choose, not to use tape to divide the
black from the body color. It was a quick assembly line hack to black out
the engine compartment, not a precision operation, and the line from black
to body at the left and right sides of the pinch-weld and tops of inner
fenders should be fuzzy, not distinct.
If you'd like a good formula for catalyzed semi-gloss black enamel for
your engine compartment, please let me know. It's dead-on right, and my car
has won numerous 1st place awards in stock and concours judged events.
Engine compartment should not be flat, and not gloss black either.

All,
Eastwood sells a not-flat - not gloss type paint that is supposedly
a duplicate of factory paint.
