To those of you who are interested in Classic Cougars, read on.... To
those of you who are not, SORRY ABOUT THE BANDWIDTH!!

This Message Forwarded from Carl Graziano of the Classic Cats Home Page:

-------------------------------
Fellow Cougar owners and enthusiasts:

I'm happy to announce the creation of a great new service--an online
mailing list for owners and fans of the classic (1967-73) Mercury
Cougar!

The "CLASSIC-COUGARS" listserv is a virtual "bulletin board" of sorts,
where you can post questions and comments and respond to items posted by

others, using nothing more than standard e-mail. It's the brainchild of
Jim Karamanis, a '71 XR-7 convertible owner in Woodbridge, Va., who
approached me about alternatives to the newsgroup
(alt.autos.mercury.cougar) I created to accomplish many of the same
goals.

That newsgroup, Jim and I agreed, has been something of a
disappointment,
so far. It's been slow to spread to all corners of the Internet and
already has been overwhelmed by "spam"--everything from garden variety
get-rich-quick schemes to some jerk trying to sell an auto glass shop.

So, Jim contacted the administrator of a classic Mustang mailing list
and
he agreed to establish a similar Cougar list on the same server.

The best part is that Jim and I will "moderate" this mailing list,
meaning
we'll have some control over who posts messages and what gets posted.
This
means no spam (a *very* good thing) and some limits on off-topic
discussions (good or bad, depending on your perspective). For the most
part, though, we'll take a "hands-off" approach to the list--we want
this
to be as open a forum as possible for Cougar owners. As long as you keep

it civil and mostly on-topic, you're free to post what you want. And, of

course, those who are just fans of the classic cat, but don't own one,
are
welcome, too.

Those familiar with the listserv concept can skip the next few
paragraphs.
For those unfamiliar with mailing lists, a quick explanation:

A listserv mailing list basically allows you to send one message to a
central address and have that message distributed to all other
subscribers. And as is probably obvious, the subscribers share a common
interest--in our case, classic Cougars. If someone responds to your
message, that response is, in turn, distributed to all subscribers. The
result is a running conversation to which you can contribute or that you

can simply read as it progresses.

So, let's say you have an engine question or need to find a source for a

part. You post a message and that gets distributed to the many--we hope,

one day, hundreds--of Cougar fans subscribed to the list. Chances are
good
someone out there will have an answer for you. As you can imagine, a
listserv can be a *very* powerful resource.

The important thing to remember about a listserv is that there are two
main e-mail addresses you must know. The first (in our case,
"(email redacted)"winking smiley is the address to which you send
subscription requests and other subscription-related commands, such as
those to temporarily suspend your receipt of mail or stop it altogether.

This will be the address you contact first to subscribe to the mailing
list, as I will explain in greater detail shortly.

The second address (in our case,
"(email redacted)"winking smiley
is the address to which you send the messages you want other subscribers

to read. This is the address you'll mostly concern yourself with after
you
subscribe initially.

Now the subscription instructions:

1. Create an e-mail message to (email redacted)

2. Leave the "subject" line of that message blank.

3. For the first line of the body of the message type:

subscribe CLASSIC-COUGARS <first name> <last name>

Make sure you replace "<first name>" and "<last name>" with your first
and
last name. For example, if your name is John Doe, your subscription
request would read:

subscribe CLASSIC-COUGARS John Doe

4. Remove all other characters from the body of the message, such as
your
signature line (this step isn't essential, but you'll get an error
message
along with your subscription confirmation if you don't do this).

5. Send the message.

And that's it. You should, within a few minutes normally, receive
confirmation that you are subscribed to the CLASSIC-COUGARS list.

Now you may post messages to the list. To do that, simply send a
standard
e-mail message, with whatever you want in the subject line and body, to
(email redacted) . The listserv will then
distribute
your message to all other subscribers.

If you need help with listserv maintenance commands (such as temporarily

suspending or ending your subscription), send a message to
(email redacted) with a blank subject line and just the
word HELP as the body of the message. You'll get an e-mail back soon
describing other commands.

It is our hope that you'll make use of this free mailing list service.
We
think it will be a significant benefit to all Cougar owners and fans. If

you have questions or need help subscribing to the list, contact me at
(email redacted).
