Hello, long time reader, first time writer. Looking for an Autolite 1100
for a 66 3.3 Litre engine. I think I have called every carb shop in the
states, most waiting on cores to rebuild. Anyone have info on one anywhere)? I
know that Pony Carburetors has them for a little over $400, but I was trying to
keep a lower budget with this thing. Thanks.

My personal recommendation, based on their shoddy workmanship, is: avoid
Pony Carburetors at all costs. I bought my carb for my 351C at Recarbco
Carburetors an Pittsburg, CA (925-439-7030). They did an excellent job on
my carb. I don't know how they're fixed for Autolite 1100's, but it's
worth a look.

I second Dan's rec about Pony Carbs. They've redone one of my carbs twice
and it still isn't right.

Shoddy workmanship + outrageous pricing = I'd look elsewhere. Seriously.

First, welcome to the forum. Don't be a lurker, jump right in and ask any
question you have. Remember, there are no stupid questions. And I'm sure
you'll have much to contribute too.

Have you tried the local auto parts store?
My car is a 65 3.3 litre (200 CI for us Yankees) and so is my son's car.

I've found that the local Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts generally have
the Autolite 1100 in stock or can get it within 24 hours. Ditto with Naapa
auto parts. No such luck with Pep-Boys, they rarely have anything that will
fit our cars, but Advanced almost always has the part we need for our 65 &
66 cars.

I've moved away from the autolite 1100's on my cars. They were asthnatic at
best when they were brand new. Now after 40+ years of being rebuilt, they
pretty much all suck.

Both my son and I are now running Weber 2bbl carbs using the
CliffordPerformance.com carburetor adapters. The difference is truly
ASTOUNDING! We probably saved the cost of the carb & adapter in fuel
mileage in less than 2 years. And what a boost we got in seat of the pants
performance! It really woke those lazy 6 bangers up!!!

I documented the install of mine at robaldo.com/ProjectWeber
Just click on the first picture, and use the <next> button at the bottom of
the screen for a blow-by-blow description of the install. It took about an
hour in total.

You know Paul, I'm going to have to sit down and figure that out.

It's probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 20mpg on 93 octane, perhaps a bit
better on lower octane, but I don't want to retard my timing the amount required
to use 87 - 89 octane fuel. Without retarding the timing, pinging becomes a
major issue on the lower octane fuels.

What I CAN tell you is before the Weber it used to take me 2 tanks of gas to go
back & forth to work (25 miles each way) for 5 days a week, but had about 3/4
tank left at the end of the week. Now I only fill up 1 time a week, drive the
same distance to work & back, and still have around 1/4 tank at the end of the
week.

Doing the math assuming a 16 gal tank, that comes to roughly 12-13 mpg with the
Autolite 1100, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 mpg using the Weber. At
the current price of gas, the Weber has certainly paid for itself by now.

Now my son's car doesn't get nearly the MPG I get. He's around 15 mpg right now
(he actually tracks his mpg, something I've always been a bit lazy about). I'm
still trying to figure out why his mileage is so low. He has a freshly rebuilt
engine, and as of 2 weeks ago, a full high performance electronic ignition.

He does have a C4 automatic, whereas I have a T5 5 speed manual with .63
overdrive, which absolutely will give me better gas mileage, but I still think
he should be doing better than 15. (for that matter, I should probably be doing
better than 20)

Yeah, it is a nice looking carb, but I hate that little square breather. I've
replaced it with a "triangle" shaped Edelbrock since those pictures were taken,
but I'm still looking for a breather that I like.

Lance.

Yes - welcome to the group!

I too have a 65 6-cyl (200). The summer before last I found I needed
to get a rebuilt carb for my motor and started calling the local auto
parts stores (Checker, Autozone, Napa). I found that their suppliers
(the carb rebuilders) had stopped rebuilding these carbs. I found one
at Pep Boys - they had to order it from their regional warehouse and
it was the last they had. I don't know if the rebuilder has started
rebuilding them again or not - no one could give me an answer at the
time and I haven't had to check since. I agree with Lance that the
local parts stores are the best place to start when looking for parts
- they have all the normal wear parts much cheaper than the Mustang
specialty catalogs. But if they still don't carry the rebuilt carbs I
can only think of keeping an eye out at your local swap meets or on
ebay. I know they show up there from time to time, but I don't think
they are in very good shape for the most part (probably need a real
good cleaning if not a rebuild). If you aren't going for concourse
I'd give serious consideration to the Weber 2bbl that Lance talks
about. I'm going to put one of those on mine sooner or later.

I'll have to check into them... they're in driving distance.

I average about 17mpg city, 23-24 highway with an FMX 3 speed auto & a stock '72 302/2v.

What's the first thing I should look at for getting more milage?

I'm thinking about taking the AOD from my '87 and dropping it in to replace
the FMX. Anyone ever done a swap like that? It should make gas on the highway
go lots further..

Any overdrive will help considerably. I used to get 14-15 mpg before
overdrive, now it's a constant 17 mpg.

You'll have to pound out the tunnel to get the AOD in there, and there
is some trickiness with the TV cable (not sure what that is, some sort
of load sensing cable?) I've heard of, but don't know much about. I
don't like automatics personally, but I've heard this much.

I'm thinking about taking the AOD from my '87 and dropping it in to
replace
the FMX. Anyone ever done a swap like that? It should make gas on the
highway go lots further..
