Hello All,
Regarding our freshly painted '66 coupe'; The initial shock
is over and I must admit that much of my uncertainty came
from the fact that the car was terribly dirty. None of the buffing
polish had been cleaned away and the interior was/is filthy.
The shop just assumed that we were going to restore the
interior. Little did they know (assume?) that the upholstry had
just been replaced. It now has primer over-spray on it. Such
is the way with assumptions. Fortunately, we are doing an
interior color-change.
Once home and cleaned, the paint is actually quite nice. It is
not a big-money two-stage finish but it is darned nice. My son
loves it. That is what matters. We spent about 3 hours on the
car last evening cleaning and reassembling bits of the front end.
We are in no rush. Here is what we have done:
Refinished the grill and reinstalled it (a few weeks ago).
Reinstalled the aluminum trim around the lower grill opening
Installed new aluminum trim on front lip of hood
Installed new "F", "O", "R" and "D" letters on the hood
Installed one of the new "289" badges.
Installed the under-grill trim
Installed the upper bumper finisher
Temporarily installed the inner bumper mounts
Allen lovingly cleaned all the paint
This was all worth it. aubard.com and follow
the Mustang link. And oh what the heck, shoot the painter
anyway. :-P

Rick,
I have 2 questions?
1. What kind of prep work did you do? I have a personal friend of mine who
will paint the car. (he's done our boat, trailer and an old Ramcharger for
us) He'll do the bodywork also but wants me to get the car prepped to save
him the time. Have you, or anyone else, had any experience with plastic
media blasting or soda blasting? If so, what are the main differences? If
got estimates of $600 - $900 to do complete car - inside and out.
2. Are those '67 hubcaps on your '66? Are you keeping them or maybe
interested in getting rid of them?
