I believe the $300 is for vehicles that were NOT manufactured with CA
emmisions on them. If you have an engine sticker, or can prove that your car
has everything a California car would have, no problem.
But on top of that, you are going to have to pay a 7.25% "use" tax on the
value of the car when you register it. California gets you coming and going.
I would suggest leaving it registered in VA for as long as possible while you
are here. Maybe even keep an address in VA so you could continue to keep it
registered there. If you get pulled over, just tell the cops you are
"visiting" our wonderful state.
