Hi, has anybody ever replaced the tailshaft bushing on their c-4? How do you
get it out or is it one of those pieces you HAVE to have the special tool for?
Thanks!
Ron

It isn't easy to get the bushing out, but it doesn't require a lot of
disassembly.
When I did it on my '76 Granada, I used just a piece of bent rod (pretty heavy
rod) to pull the seal out of the end of the tranny, and then used the same rod
to get the bushing out. It was very stubborn. I put the rod in position and
then clamped a Vise-grip on the rod and beat on the Vise-grip (which pulled the
rod, which pulled the bushing out).
If it is really stubborn, you can carefully get the edge up with a screwdriver
and twist it out with a long nose Vise-grip (can you tell my uncle use to work
in the Vise grip factory? :-)
Then when I replaced the bushing, I put the bushing into position and pounded
it in carefully with a pvc pipe as an aid. I did the same thing with the seal,
only much more carefully.
Good luck!
Best Regards,
Keven Coates

Not too hard, but messy. Get some kitty litter and a drip pan ready.
1. disconnect e-brake stuff from transmission crossmember.
2. remove driveshaft.
3. if you have duals, disconnect exhaust system. if you have a six
or a single exhaust V-8 you mbe able to leave the exhaust alone.
4. loosen crossmember bolts and trans mount bolts. Support
transmission under oil pan. remove crossmember.
5. disconnect speedo gear.
6. remove the six bolts which hold tailshaft housing.
7. remove tailshaft housing.
8. crawl out from under car and wipe all the oil off of yourself.
9. remove rear seal from tailshaft housing.
10. use a punch or screwdriver to drive out the bushing. Make note of
the alignment of any oil holes first.
11. clean the housing thoroughly. Use properly sized driver to knock
the new bushing in. You can rent or borrow from the auto parts store.
DON"T TRY TO HAMMER THE BUSHING IN WITHOUT IT. You will only damage
the end of the bushing; it's very soft.
12. replace the rear seal.
13. crawl back into the oily mess under your car and reverse the
procedure. make sure you clean the gasket surface on the transmission
and housing. Use a new gasket or a bead of silicone to seal it.
14. Good luck. figure on spending the afternoon.
Jack
