Hi,
after three month of clutch chatter, I finally put my Mustang on Jackstands
and took the T5, Bellhousing and clutch out. The CenterForce disc is barely
worn (10 passes and 2000 miles) but the pressure plate has some small blue
spots and the flywheel has A LOT of blue spots as well as some hair cracks
outside the bolt area and the welds that retain the ring gear have som hair
cracks as well. The flywheel was also resurfaced with a rather rough stone,
which brings up another question : what should a flywheel surface be like ?
Mirror smooth or gritty rough ?
Anyhow, I'll buy a new flywheel ! Which one would you suggest : billet
aftermarket or Ford MotorSport unit ?
The release bearing was only half attached to the fork. That might have
been a cause for the chatter. Otherwise evrything looked dry and nice. I
measured the disc and found out that it has a diameter of only 10 inches
(254 mm) ! I thought the smallest clutch for a 289 or 302 was 10.5 inches !
The diameter of the pressure plates surface measures 12 inches (310 mm).
Where are these famous 10.5 inches measured ?
Do you think that I can reuse the pressure plate and just get a new disc
and release bearing ? That Dual Friction disc has some copper filaments in
it, that really grab. Maybe I should opt for a less radical disc, since my
1966 Mustang only runs high 13s.
Thanks for any advice,
