Walt,
Thanks for the recommendation on Modern Drivelines!
Bruce does seem to be a great and say's he's known you for years.
He's setting me up with everything I need to convert the worn out Dagenham
to a modern T5.
I decided to keep the stock clutch linkage, and get the OEM shifter, so it
will at least look proper for the period. Nobody should be the wiser unless
they happen to look under the car. Or they hear me shift through 5 gears
instead of 4.
My tranny guy talked to him too and was really impressed. So much so that
he has decided to wipe out all charges for any work he's done on the car!!!
Including $400 of custom CNC machine work fabricating on the old
transmission. He's paying the machine shop out of his pocket and taking the
loss on that one.
He's only charging me to install the new T-5 kit. He's not even going to
charge me to remove the old transmission. He's kind of excited to see how
this kit works.
When he told me that he was erasing all current charges I told him that he
just bought himself a customer for life! THAT is how to make new
customers! I wish more companies acted that way.
I can't WAIT until this is done. My car has been in the shop for over a
month and I'm really beginning to miss it! But with gas prices soaring,
that overdrive gear is sure gonna be nice!
Lance.

The T-5 is awesome. You'll love the first gear since it's good and low,
and the overdrive reduces noise and vibration dramatically.

I'm sure I will. The first gear is 2.95 and the overdrive is .63! In
addition to noise & vibration, it's going to be fantastic for my gas mileage!
couple that with a 3.20 rear end and p195/70 r14 tires and we'll be cruising at
70mph at just over half the rpm that I ran at before!
Anyone have an RPM calculator to do the math??? It's too early for me to think
about it..

Currently I'm running a 2.79 rear gear, which will be switched shortly
to a 3.25, but in the mean time, I can run up to 80 mph at just under
2000 rpm! But, my T-5 is a stock '94 Mustang T-5, so the ratios are
different. It's a 3.35 first and a .68 overdrive IIRC.

I just found an excel gear speed calculator. With my new gears, it puts me at
around 75mph at 2000rpm in 5th gear and a top speed of about 150mph at 4000rpm.
That's a BIG change from my previous top speed of around 95mph at 4000rpm!!!
And it's in a good place for the 6 cylinder's s power curve in 5th gear at
2000rpm, so passing should be decent without having to downshift to 4th..
I can't wait! Driving is going to be FUN again!

There's one problem with that idea. Unfortunately fifth gear is only a
cruising gear. I wouldn't go more than 110 mph or so with it. It will
blow under long periods of high horsepower/speed. Road racers have
problems with this often until they learn that fifth gear is much
smaller than the others and not designed for full out speed.

...besides, top speed is achieved in 4th gear ... shift to fifth
and you'll slow down .. OK, so that's at about 135 MPH....
I've had my 67 Trans Am car up to 140 on the track... 3.89 gears
at Seattle/Pacific/Kent Raceway ...and California Speedway.
It takes at least 400HP ( I think) to go that fast with the
wonderful aerodynamics of a Mustang.
I won't admit how fast I've had my Corvette on I505 ....
The Corvette has a 3.42 rear end and a 0.5 overdrive
Which means, mathematically, it has a top speed of 280 MPH ...;-)
(It's actual is around 170)

It's been my experience that top speed in 5th is more of a drag problem
than strength, the stock 5th just wont pull on the top end, you'll
actually go faster in 4th. You can get an aftermarket ratio of
something like .85 or .90 if you really care about top speed but the
stock OD lets you get a little more crazy with the rear gear.

I just found an excel gear speed calculator. With my new gears, it
puts me at around 75mph at 2000rpm in 5th gear and a top speed of about
150mph at 4000rpm. That's a BIG change from my previous top speed of
around 95mph at 4000rpm!!!
And it's in a good place for the 6 cylinder's s power curve in 5th gear
at 2000rpm, so passing should be decent without having to downshift to
4th..
I can't wait! Driving is going to be FUN again!

I'm sure I will. The first gear is 2.95 and the overdrive is .63! In
addition to noise & vibration, it's going to be fantastic for my gas
mileage!
couple that with a 3.20 rear end and p195/70 r14 tires and we'll be
cruising at 70mph at just over half the rpm that I ran at before!
Anyone have an RPM calculator to do the math??? It's too early for me
to think about it..

The T-5 is awesome. You'll love the first gear since it's good and low,
and the overdrive reduces noise and vibration dramatically.

For the same road speed the driveshaft speed is the same as before - as
determined by the rear axle ratio and tire diameter. Transmission type or
gearing does not impact the driveshaft speed. Gotcha!

Actually, I was talking about THEORETICAL road speed. I fully realize that
there's no way I'm gonna drive THAT fast in the car. In fact, In a 40+
year old car with drum brakes, you aren't going to see me pass 70 to 75 mph.
The FUN part is that where before 60-70 mph left me little power for
passing. Now with the O.D. gear I should be around 2000rpm at 70 mph which
puts me near the peak in torque and in a fairly good place for H.P. on my 6
cyl engine.
In theory at least, I should be able to accelerate quickly to pass slower
cars or get out of box situations.
For me, it's not the going fast that's fun. It's the getting there.
Ie. 0 to 60 in 4 seconds is a heck of a lot more fun that 0-60 in 30
seconds!
Lance.

Ah - clarification. Sounds like a you got the right plan there. Still a
good idea to have the shaft checked and balanced.
There used to be a place in Ft. Worth that did dynamic balancing on the car.
In the "old days", there was many occasions to take the Falcon - drum brakes
and all - above 100 without vibration or anythign else. Yes, they do fade
fairly fast but drum brakes still get it done. But - disks are really the
way to go, that's for sure.
