My brakes are acting up. The pedal tends to go mostly to the floor
before it really grabs. Also, tonight when slowing down I heard a loud
pow when I had to slow down real fast.
These are the drum brakes for a 6 cyl.
Should I get a new brake hardware kit for the front brakes?
I know that I would have to change the spindles to do a disc swap and get
new wheels. What else in the suspension would I have to change?

thanks for help
I am going to a brake shop tomorrow for them to check them out.

Jason,

Sounds like the brakes are way out of adjustment and possibly worn.

Pow? Stop driving and check those brakes! Could be something loose or
broken, either in the brakes or the bearings.

If you're going to rebuild the brakes, by all means get new hardware. After
>30 years levers are worn, cables stretched, and springs are sprung.
Cylinders are probably suspect, too.

Here's the deal on 6 cyl disc conversions. Granada/Maverick spindles and
brakes will work, but......
You either have to change over to V-8 steering or modify Granada/Maverick
outer tie rod ends to fit the six cylinder linkage.

On my first swap for my 6 cyl coupe, I modified some Granada outer tie rod
ends by turning down the threads to 1/2" x 20 RH threads. On the plus side,
the Granada ends were only $11 each and another $10 to have them rethreaded.

On the down side, it works, but the bump steer is awful. Big toe changes
everytime you hit a dip. Plus you have to change the rear end so that you
have five lugs on each end of the car (new wheels and tires).

I eventually replaced the entire steering linkage with V-8 components when I
had time and money.
