I apologize - I see (after looking over the web site) Mark has gone up a bit
on the prices. The price of steel must be really taking a toll. Also check
with these guys: autoweldchassis.com/rh.ivnu I know I've seen axle
packages advertised for under $400 but I can't put my finger on one right
now. Whatever - I built a 31 spline 9" for the Falcon a few years back
using the MW axle kit, Trac-tech softlocker and Richmod gears. After 1600
something passes, all the parts still look new inside. I spent nearly $1700
on the deal and it's been 100% reliable. So it'll be worth the investment.

Engine - Neither. The Mustang runs a 302 with 9.5:1 flattops, 216/228 cam,
iron GT-40 heads. It has 26-10 x 15 M/T ET Drag slicks. Stock 28 spline 8"
axles. I'm not real worried about the axles, I've got spares anyway. I
know a guy that ran several years in the 11's pulling the front tires about
8" or so every pass. The car is a Cougar and he ran an 8" rear. FWIW, the
Mustang has about 800 passes on the axles at this point. I thin kthe key
thing here is that we run autos in both cars. I'm sure that your stick car
with the slicks will certainly tear up stuff, axles included.

Hi again Chris,

I'ld like to know where you get your axles as Mark Williams told me
$299.00 for one Axle and this was just for the axle ( NO bearing ). This
was just last week. I was told by Moser $199.00 for the axle and $35.00 for
the bearing and $20.00 shipping. You never said what engine you are running
in your 70 Mustang. 351 Windsor or 351 Cleveland??? My slow times are due
to a 1971 302 block which has a higher deck height which lowers my
compression quite a bit even though I am running Flat top pistons. I am
still working on getting the best times out of this motor. Next year I will
be using a 5.0 roller block with 11-1 pistons and a F-303 cam and 1.7
rockers. This will combination should do a lot better. You also did not
say what tranny you are running. I am running a Toploader 4 speed with 4th
gear a .51 overdrive and I have 5:71-1 gears in the rearend. The motor
never goes over 6500 RPM. I am still working on my times as I stated
earlier, but have been plagued with little problems, like breaking the axle,
and breaking 3rd gear in my tranny. The axle I broke was New although it
was about 20 years old. Both Moser and Mark Williams told me that you
should never run slicks on 28 spline axles, they just can't take it. Like I
said I will be steping upto a 33 spline setup next year, one that I would
never break with a small block. I have a friend that runs at the same track
as I do and he runs around 108 in the quarter with a 64 Falcon and a small
block.

GOD BLESS!!!

Leland

You payin' too much for axles. I run Mark Williams
Masterline 31 spline axles in a custom width 9" housing - cost $299 for the
PAIR. Also, our 70 Mustang runs in the 12s @ 100+ (8.27 @ 82 MPH in the 1/8
mile) and runs 28 spline stock axles, has for years. With a spool. Granted
they need upgrading but with a perperly set up rear, they should survive.
