Hi guys...

Short of installing oxygen sensors, how does one properly set the idle
mixture on the Autolite 2100? I'm afraid of running too lean, especially
in summer!

The initial setting is about 1 1/2 turns out from seated. Turn the screw
in with the engine idling hot in gear(with brake set and wheels blocked)
until the engine starts to run rough an then back it out till it runs the
smoothest. Note; both idle screws should end up being adjusted
approximately the same, if one side adjustment seems to not do much of
anything then you have other problems that need addressed. Such as vacuum
leaks or trash in idle circuit of carb. Hope this helps.

Max Watson asked about adjusting idle mixture:

As someone mentioned earlier, you start at 1.5 turns from bottoming the
screws, and play with it until it seems the smoothest. A more accurate
way is to use a vacuum guage hooked to the intake manifold. Adjust for
the highest steady reading. This may involve a couple of iterations
with idle speed and ignition timing, but the vacuum guage can tell you
all sorts of things wrong with the engine. Also, since this is IDLE
mixture you're adjusting, it will have no affect on the main mixture
circuit; only changing jets will affect that. So teaking the idle
mixture will have no affect on running temperatures, unless the engine
spends most of its time idling.

I've always used the practice of removeing the air cleaner, hooking up a
vacuum gauage then adjusting the carb. Ajust one side until the maxium
vacuum reading is recieved then the other side. Then I go back to the
first adjuster and move it in until the vacuum just starts to drop off
then the other side (this seems to compensate for the restriction in the
airclaner. Thats all there is to it.. There is always the sound (or
even the water glass )methods winking smiley
