I hope someone on the list can help me diagnose a problem with my 66
Convertible 200, which as an 1100 carb that was sold to me by Pony Carbs
about three years ago. I believe it is a problem with the choke setting.
Here are the symptoms:
When I fist start the car from cold, it runs really rough for the first
few minutes, and emits black smoke from the tailpipe and a really rich gas
smell. As the car warms up, the idle evens out and the car runs much more
smoothly in general. I have the choke stove tube connected correctly and
the heater hose routed correctly next to the choke spring. Last spring I
checked the opening of the choke plate at stone cold temp with a drill bit
per my Chilton manual, but I know how notorious Chiltons are for
innacuracy. Any ideas?
Reply via email if this is an easy one and you think it is more
appropriate.
TIA,
Tom

Sounds like the initial setting may be correct - you said you checked
it.
*IF* this is a _new_ or _recent_ problem it is symptomatic of the "Pull
Off" mechanism. Most of them are vacuum operated so it could be the
hose connections or the vacuum module itself.
Occasionally you will need to make physical adjustments to the pull off
"rod" (piece between the vacuum module and the choke mechanical) to
obtain the correct settings.
Your book(s) should show you this check as well.
Adjustments/Check:
* Close the choke fully (preferable to use cold choke, not fingers -
fingers can nullify check if you don't understand the mechanisms)
* using the pull off mechanism, apply vacuum and measure pull off.
Replace (hoses, module) or adjust as needed.
Operation of:
Before the engine starts the choke is fully closed, rich mixture to
start engine - Once the engine is running this vacuum pull off is to
open the choke butterfly (usually the same amount as the setting you
previously mentioned) thereby leaning out the mixture (allows more air
into carburetor throat). This is called _cold_ "operating enrichment",
done by _partially_ restricting the air flow or partial choke operation
until the engine is warm enough and the choke is backed off by heat.
Ain't mechanicals fun? TTFN...
