Anyone tried dyno tuning?

I posted this question a few weeks ago & got no response, maybe because I
was asking specifically about the Detroit area. Now I'll widen the search:
Has anyone had their carbureted vehicle tweaked on a dyno? Can the
distributor be curved this way or only on the bench? Is dyno tuning
expen$ive?

Varied experiences
Put the Falcon on one gained 25 hp at the rear tires, swapped carbs,
tried different configurations, 2 hours/$400.00 - 285hp/rw
Mustang, gained .5 hp, fine tuned A/F mixture, did nothing for WOT
brek-up that was/is still occurring. $500/2.5 hours. All kinds of
carb/dist adjustments on and off of the car. - 310hp/rw

Same tuner in both cases

Mark, I have done both Chassis and Engine Dyno tuning. Both gained anywhere
from 20 to 30 horses. Cost for Chassis time (rwhp) was $69.95 for the 1st
hour and then $55.00 an hour after that. 4 weeks ago I had the new 347
stroker on the engine Dyno for a total of 10 hours and we made 36 pulls. The
net result was a gain from the first pull at 586.7 HP to the 18th pull at
604.6 HP. That was from 2:00 p.m on a Friday until around 6:00 pm, back at
7:30 am till just after 1:00 pm. We tried a different intake on that
Saturday. Between runs I was changing jets, timing, with or without spacers
and so on. Cost for that session was $500.00 plus tax.

To me it was worth the cost...I was trying to tweak out every HP I could, and
there would be no way it could be done at the track. You can rent the track
as well for $1000.00...minimum of 6 cars, maximum of 10.

I have had a couple of motors done on a dyno... however these were engine
dynos not in the car chasis dynos. It's really the only way to go.

It's a good way to get an extra 20-30 horsepower.

It ran me $500.00 per day, but I got a good 8 hours on the dyno to tweak stuff.

Also...who does the jetting, curving & such? Me (who has no parts or
experience in this) or the dyno tech (and if so, do I provide the parts or

For the Falcon I took a mechanic familiar with the engine and he worked
with the dyno technician - best results
Mustang just the dyno technician - .5 hp gain, hotter running
temperature, net/net no gain. This may be because we had set it so well
to begin with. I've been working on the Mustang combo for 20 years.

I brought the mechanic whose shop I use. As far as jetting, I ended up buying
a jet pack from Holley, that has a full range of jets. I did all of my own
jet changing...fairly easy..at the direction of the Dyno guy, my mechanic set
up the timing when needed.
