Has anyone on the list built a 351 W stroker? P.A.W.
sells a kit that strokes the 351 to a 427 for about
$2,500 for the short block assembly. I'm trying to
research what kind of reliability/lifespan a stroker
has compred to a regular motor. I don't want to spend
the money building this incredible, high-horsepower
engine if it's only going to last 5,000 miles.
Also, has anyone built a 351 with EFI? From browsing
the catalogs it looks like you just put a 351 lower
intake manifold on the block and then just use the
upper intake, computer, wiring, etc from a 5.0. Is
this correct or are there other specific 351 parts for
fuel injection?
I'm planning to put the motor in either a Cobra kit or
a GT500 clone. However, I've got to do this one step
at a time, so I figured I'd start with the motor, but
I really want to map out the cost and each step I need
to take and what financial goals I need to meet
through the whole project.

The stroker lifespan depends on many factors - not the least of which is
your care and driving habits of course. There are many different
stroker combinations (I'm currently using 4.17s x 4.04b) and have built
or used other standard combos referred to as 393, 402, 418/420 and 427.
By the general nature of the beasts and their generally increasing rod
angles, their lifespan should be shorter than the equivalent stock
stroke engine. The rev limit is lower too - thanks to the high piston
speeds at mid-stroke.
I am expecting about 40k miles before overhaul of my particular 427W
street combo I'm running right now. Reality says I'll never get that
many miles on my weekend warrior - so I don't care. If I do I'll be
happy to do the work. Love the torque and pull of strokers. Just THINK
'faster' and woooohoooo!
Anyway, I've not used the PAW kit but hear "it works". I just build
each stroker with what it particularly needs. I assume it is fully
balanced (check that!) and see to what spec so you know what you can
bolt to it (flywheels and flexplates). Also see what compression it is
supposed to have as it is sometimes difficult to keep it low enough in a
big stroker to use pump gas.
I have a lot more thoughts on strokers - but they would be specific to
an app. If you shortcut your build in the quality, or especially the
matching of parts, you will be disappointed as you would any other poor
combo. Stroking isn't magic in itself but covers a lot of sins. My 427
street stroker is quite basic and was about $5000 to complete myself.
As far as EFI, it is simpler than most assume, but has snags. Once
again, what do you want or need? A stock 351 lower is a bit restrictive
for a typical big stroker. GT40 lowers are getting expen$ive. You are
basically correct in your example layout - but anything is possible. I
have not done a 1-for-1 swap because it was not suitable for my app. If
that's what you really want, be sure to yak with someone who's actually
done it with the same type system. I have a couple names.
I'm currently retrofitting a dual-plane street Weiand carb manifold to
port injection and dual throttle bodies. For me the easier route is
mostly fabbed stuff than trying to adapt a complete factory system. New
computer (MegaSquirt again) and parts that work together in this case
(Mitsubishi injectors, Ford throttle bodies, Saturn wiring connectors,
etc.) It'll be a while before it's done.
Fred, I would say you need to fully envision your dream (including the
little details) and what you expect it to do, and then build to meet
that. I've lost thousands building on-the-fly to a blurry vision.
Great car - but not what it could have been for less money. And it's
easier to reach a firm goal one solid step at a time. What's your dream?

I'm currently stroking my 351C, but do have a buddy that has a stroked 351W
as well.
Limit yourself to 383 or 396 cu in if you want longer life. I'm going to
408, but only put about 1000 miles/year on my engine, much of it drag racing.
I have EFI (Accel DFI) on my 351C. You can get all the parts you need from
Accel and it only requires simple machining work to get it all functional.
Info on my EFI setup is at:

Fine looking car, but that page on engine damage made me hurt to look

Hehe...tell me about it. A darn $5 part cost me $3-4k to get my car back
ready again to run. Which is why I'm stroking it. What the heck, it's
tore apart now anyways!
