Howdy

I ordered the Mustangs Plus Super Starter Kit. It just came in and I am
wondering if any of you experienced hands have any tips or suggestions for
me. What should I expect, in replacing the suspension? Any special tools I
should have other than a spring compressor?

I am also doing the swap to disks up front while I am at it.

Finally, I am putting on a set of Vintage 45s. I am still trying to decide
on tire size. I am thinking either 225 or 245. Does anyone have any
experience with the 245? Does it fit ok?

Thanks

Hmmm, tips...

1 - Dont hurry
2 - Dont hurry
3 - Be careful with the springs
4 - Dont hurry....

But anyway...

Expect to put in about 2 eight hour shifts on this. Three or four if
you havent taken off the old suspension yet...

I'm not exactly sure what's in the package, but with some assumptions...

Taking everything apart is pretty straightforward... You may need a
(special tool) pickle fork to split various steering parts apart.

You'll need jack stands for both sides of the vehicle...

Trying to recall how this went...
Tires off - trivial
Shocks - trivial
Springs - be careful. Compress everything with a jack first... Then use the
compressor...
Brake Drums - dont bother... careful of your brake lines, but you'll be
replacing them
anyway...
Steering arms - straightforward... Use pickle fork for ease...
Spindles - pretty straightforward.
Upper A-arms - straightforward... Might be rusted. Have a release agent
ready...
Lower arm - straightforward... Again, might be rusty...

Replacing bushings with the (assumed) Poly bushings... You should have
directions...
I had some trouble getting them all in... If your kit comes with new
uppers and lower
arms with bushings already... You're in luck!

You know... Its all pretty straight forward... Just dont push it, take your
time... Follow the directions...

Exceptions...

I had to grind on the backing plate for clearance... Not too much though...
Stainless Brake Lines are a pain, in my opinion... I had leaks everywhere...
had to tighten them beyond all comprehension to get them to stop...

I had to rebend a couple of lines to make them work with the proportioning
valve... have the tools ready...

This is a great time to do the "Shelby Mod", and lower your upper A-arms...

Make sure to wrap parts contacting Poly Bushings (that are not otherwise
lubed) with Teflon Tape, or be ready to listen to squeaks...

Make sure you paint everything before you install it... Let the paint dry...
Clear cote any of those "natural" parts to avoid rust...

Rich

Hi!
i brought the kit from Canadian Mustang (great!!) and I did the job, you
only need as a special tool, a spring compressor, and a nice set of
wrenches, etc, etc. And a pair of jacks stands.
I prefer the 225

Do everything Rich just said. I just got done with this project that I
started back in december of 99, but I took my time. Make sure you detail
everything while you have all the suspension out. I took several parts to
have them power coated and just made everything perfect. The only thing I
was disapointed about was the steering when I got done. I have all new
suspension parts on my car but it steers like crap. I need to have the
steering box rebuilt or try one of those Flaming River steering boxes. I
have to find out more about that first.

OH Yeah! Watch out for rust under the upper control arm, inside the shock
tower at the bottom in that little pocket. It is usually filled with dirt.
What happens a lot is water gets in there and sits with the dirt, and that
will rust a whole right through the frame support. That happened to the
right side of my car and I took it to the body shop to have it patched.
Better than new now.

Good luck!

I haven't put it on yet, but I just bought a rebuilt gearbox from Mustangs
Plus (who else??). I checked & their warranty is the same as Flaming
River's. Mustangs Plus said all internals were new, their supplier just uses
rebuilt boxes. Sounds to me like the only difference was a new or old box.
In my book $$$ talks. YMMV
