Ok, this is not on my classic, but I am at a total loss of what to do. On my 91 GT the alternator died. Replaced it with a new one. Worked for 20 minutes, then it died. When I removed it, it was hot to the touch(more than just engine heat). Got another new one and a wiring harness from the alternator to the starter solinoid. Worked great. Took a long trip and notice the gauge jumpimg up and down. Felt the alternator, and it was hot to the touch but still working. On short trips it works great. Longer trips, it scares me(after reading about the fire, the fuel lines run right behind the alternator). Any ideas?

Have you added anything to your electrical system like a stereo and amps
that would put more load on the alternator?

I'm assuming that the alt has a built in regulator too. Anything funny
going on with the battery?

Battery is staying charged, caught the orginal alternator before it could discharge the battery.
Yes it is an internal regulator.
Have not added anything to the electrical system. In fact it is completely stock. Radio and everything.(That is what prompted me to bay the car a year ago)
Thanks,
James

When I was a kid, we went on a trip and burned up several alternators on our
truck like you are. It turned out that the first one died, and when the
replacement went on, there was a pulley problem. I don't remember if it was
the wrong size, or just out of alignment, but it kept killing alternators.
I would check the pulley and the alignment of the alternator.

I guess it's getting overloaded... I like to replace my electric fan in
my '95 GT
every 4-5 years and keep the old one in the trunk.
As my fan motor gets older, it really hits the alternator hard when it
engages...
Think of places that might be loading it down...
