Just got a repro. Air cleaner assembly, for my 66 coupe 289 4v. It's the
one in all the catalogs, with the blue base, chrome lid & proper screened
element.
Anyway it has a nipple on the bottom of it, like for a hose to run to the
breather or something. What is this for? My current air cleaner assembly,
looks identical, just without this nipple. And I don't have an oil cap with
a place for a hose on it.
Can I just cap off this nipple with some type of cover or crimped hose? Is
this needed? Should I get a new Oil breather and connect a hose between the
two?
Help
TIA

The stock air cleaner on my 66 has a nipple for a hose to run to the oil
cap in the driver's side valve cover. This is a CA car so it might be
part of the smog equipment.

You can do either.

My 66 has one too, and it was a NC car initially.

Well it just so happens that this weekend I was speaking
with one of my Mech friends to sort out where my vacuum
hoses should go and here is how it is designed to work:
The PCV Valve on the passenger side gets a vacuum line to
the manifold vacuum (port at the back base of the carb if so
equipped), to let pressure out of the motor, the Cap on the
Driver's side should have a hose going from it to the air
cleaner, this allows filtered air INTO the motor. Most
people I have run across usually use a filtered breather oil
cap and block off the port in the air cleaner, which in this
design would work fine, the big thing is to make sure the
PCV Valve goes to the intake vacuum port.

So what should I use to block off the nipple on the bottom of the air
cleaner?

A piece of vacuum hose with a screw in it or a rubber plug.
